More accurately, you shouldn't be able to debit a higher amount than the cash register total and get cash back. That publication, of course, is no guarantee of how things actually work. Surely we all have anecdotal evidence to support the idea that things don't always go as intended.

I have friends who have seen people getting cash back on EBT cards AND, buying things other than food at stores with them. I also have friends who know of people who have sold their EBT cards for cash. There is a LOT OF FRAUD in this government program.

Yeah but we don't see any soup kitchens and bread lines in the USA right? If we were to take away food stamps soup kitchens and bread lines would spring up everywhere overnight.

Can't have that. Americans might get the impression that we are in the middle of a big depression. We are of course but so long as we keep 40 million people on foods stamps and out of bread lines the other 260 million will never know the true extent of our economic trouble.

There seems to be some confusion here. Let me try to help.

There are TWO government programs for assistance- SNAP and TEA. Both programs use EBT cards for their transactions. SNAP cards (formerly the Federal Food Stamp program) can only be used to purchase food- no cash back whatsoever.

TEA (Temporary Economic Assistance) cards CAN provide a cash benefit, and you may make two ATM withdrawals a month free, but after the two withdrawals there is a fee. Thus the attempt to purchase a two-cent grape was likely just a way to get around the fee (which is around 65 cents or so).

Thanks. Then the woman was simply avoiding a bank fee. Good for her! You all should be pleased.

The bank of course. It created that 65 cents from nothing so it only seems right it gets to keep it. Maybe it can loan it back to the government + interest a second time around.

Read this same story in the letter-to-the-editor section of my newspaper a few weeks ago.

Only the woman was buying a candy bar and not a grape. She had the same reference to her fake finger nails, nice clothes, and expensive purse.

    I think it's a made-up story.

Me too. Back when food stamps were paper instead of plastic everyone called em "grub stubs".

Several years ago, I worked in a C-store. 2 kids (about age 5) came in - each with a $1 food stamp - they "wanted" to buy a 5 cent piece of candy. I rang them up together and gave them a total of 89 cents in change - I watch them as they went out to the car - their mother gave me a dirty look.....

BTW, the kids told me they were supposed each give me a good stamp.....

Thaat my frined is a true story

Well, you are wrong about that. There are plenty of "soup kitchens" run by Christian organizations all over the country. Lots of people helping those in need, the list is endless. I don't mind tax dollars going to feed needy and hungry people. What I do mind is people scamming the system.
