For the debate behind this debate. Who will be the moderator to have to close the thread after the name calling starts? Can we add a poll about this to the thread? I vote for Dr Bob, he is dressed well for the job.

I would vote for Dr Bob to take the Republican nomination. He would be a refreshing change.

You know what I find amazing, is that there are some in this thread raking the sin of being drunk over the coals, and move right over to the gluttony thread and think that sin is hilarious.

Isn't it funny how we as humans set our own standards, and how they differ from everyone else's? Wonder why we have so many denominations? Sorry folks, sin is sin.

Will we all agree that the Bible is true?

Will we agree that the Bible says the drunkard will not enter the kingdom of heaven?

Can we agree that one can not become a drunkard if you never take the first drink?

I had a friend belonging to a very conservative denomination ask me why we do not drink, (their group believes in 'taking a little wine') They seem to have a lot of stomach trouble.

Anyway,, when he asked me to drink a drink he had poured for me I asked, "How many of them drinks would it take you to get drunk?"

"Four maybe five" he replied. Then hastily replied he wouldn't drink that many.

I said, "That's good, but say you only drink only one and it takes you five to get drunk, then you are one fifth drunken aren't you?"

A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

    Yours seeking truth,
    Dan

I swore I wouldn't get in this thread.. but oh well...

How many Big Macs does it take to make you a glutton?
    5?

If so, then one Big Mac makes you one fifth a glutton...

How many cups of coffee (caffeine) effects your mind? 5?
Then 1 cup makes you one fifth addicted to caffeine (which is a drug just like alcohol, and nicotine)

A little Leaven leaventh the whole lump.. but a Big Mac will make you lumpy....

    BTW, welcome to the boards...

    Thanks for the welcome, Tiny.

By the way, you don't look so tiny if that's you all's picture. What percentage of a glutton do you qualify as?

I'm glad you can't see me. While not obese, I do enjoy eating!

I gather you think drinking is ok?

Is it a sin? Or is drunkeness a disease?

I can live without alcohol but can't live without food.

I also wonder if you think Jesus made alcoholic wine at the marriage feast?

    Yours seeking truth,
    Dan

Many on this board think Jesus made alcoholic wine at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee. Many also accuse Him of drinking alcohol.

Scripture does not back their stance.

Some of this is from a post I posted on the gluttony thread...
I eat normal size portions.. .but I am a pretty big guy... I am losing weight, but it is tough...

I am using the weight watchers points system, and one thing I found out was not that I was eating alot (being gluttonous) as much as it was the fact I was eating the wrong type of food...

IOWS... I can have a big salad, with fat free dressing, a bowl of progresso soup.. .(the type with no points) and a turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fat free mayo, sandwich made on 35 calorie bread for around 10-12 points

or, I can have one quarterpounder with fries for 24 points...
And when I have only 33 points to use in a days time, I am actually eating more of the good stuff, and staying full than I was eating fast food.
Plus I have lost 16 pounds since Jan 1!

I have also slowed down and am enjoying my meals...
So I am eating more than I used to, and losing weight.
    Weird huh?

Another thing that is contributing to weight gain in America is the fact that we are moving from the industrial age to the information age...

Ever wonder why preachers have a hard time with their weight... Here is my take on this..

I started noticing my weight gain when I was working as an parent locator in the WV child support agency. It was hard work... I had a caseload of over 3000 deadbeat parents I was doing skiptracing on. But most of my work was at a desk.

It was mentally exhausting. So by the time I got home of the evening I was exhausted... I wasn't burning the calories I was taking in, but my brain was so tired, I was so mentally bushed, I couldn't do anything physical.

I have heard people say that desk work is not really working... I disagree.
And as we move into the information age, there are more desk workers now than there were yrs ago.
So now I am a pastor, again, a lot of brain work, not a lot of physical labor, but at the same time I get just as tired.

I have to make myself exercise... and I HATE IT!!!. After a long day, I am mentally tired, and have no desire to work somemore!

Anyway, that is my take on it...

To me gluttony goes along with laziness...
much more than with weight gain.

Gluttony involves the lack being a good steward. Getting as much as you can because it is there.. not planning for the future, and trying to get something without working for it. It involves lack of self control, and the proper use of moderation....

A skinny person can be a glutton also..
A shop-a-holic is a glutton... the more things they buy the better they feel.

I do believe that when the Bible says wine.. it means wine. I do believe it had alcohol in it.. I am unconvinced that it was as strong as today's wine.. We have been down this road before and I am not going to get into it again....

I don't drink.. within the culture I live, it would be a sin... as it would destroy my testimony, and be a stumbling block for others...
I am at liberty to in moderation, but I choose not to. (I never did like the taste of beer anyway... yuck!)

But I realize there are good brothers and sisters in Christ that can have a glass of wine at dinner, and it is not a sin for them...

I will not debate this further.. I am sure others will... but I have too much to do to worry about something I have already settled in my heart with God...

BTW.. good post on the meat thread... I liked that.

Oh, since you are new I will let you know why I go by Tiny... it was a sarcastic joke back when I was a youth pastor by one of my youth... and I just kept the nickname...

One day I may match my name!!! lol

    tinytim,

do you have a lot of weight watcher's recipes?

I used to have a link to hundreds of them.

I have the point chart and a slide that computes points for me.

No, not a lot.. we have just been watching the stuff we use by using the slide, and I have a list of food points on my pocket PC along with the points for all my favorite restaurants... and it goes with me everywhere I go...

I would love to have a WW calculator program for my pocket PC... that would be great.. but I have gotten pretty good calculating the points using the formula... I can look at a nutrition label, and most of the time (90%) get the points right.. so when we go grocery shopping.. my wife gets a kick out of me....

my favorite desert is a small slice of angels food cake, with sugar free strawberry glaze and 4 strawberries sliced thin... with fat free whip cream.... if I make it right, it is only 3 points...

What really surprised me was that some regular ice cream is lower in points than some brands of sugar free ice cream... or even low fat ice cream...

Yes, it's the alcohol debate has been beaten to death.

So.....maybe we could switch sides? We did this in college a few times.

Perhaps if you are tired of the alcohol debates on the BB you could take the time to listen to the presentation by Churck Phelps. He is definitely a fundamentalist, but his presentation is not a red-faced, screaming diatribe; rather it is very well reasoned and persuasive. If you think that it is OK for Christians to drink, take the time to listen to his presentation. If he brings up a single fact that you have never heard before and you become convinced that he is correct, won't you be a better Christian? If you listen and still disagree, you have an opportunity to grow in your appreciation for a brother in Christ even though you disagree and you get to love him anyway! What have you got to lose?
