    Yup, the CEB makes a good companion-read after some of the more famous translations.

    It reminds me of the Good News Translation (GNT).

    Psalm 54 CEB

    God! Save me by your name;
    defend me by your might!
    God! Hear my prayer;
    listen to the words of my mouth!
    The proud have come up against me;
    violent people want me dead.
    They pay no attention to God.
    But look here: God is my helper;
    my Lord sustains my life.
    He will bring disaster on my opponents.
    By your faithfulness, God, destroy them!
    I will sacrifice to your freely;
    I will give thanks to your name, Lord,
    because it's so good,
    and because God has delivered me
    from every distress
    My eyes have seen
    my enemies' defeat.

    Psalm 54 NJB

    God, save me by your name,
    in your power vindicate me.
    God, hear my prayer,
    listen to the words I speak.
    Arrogant men are attacking me,
    bullies hounding me to death,
    no room in their thoughts for God.
    But now God is coming to my help,
    the Lord, among those who sustain me.
    May their wickedness recoil on those
    who lie in wait for me.
    Yahweh, in your constancy destroy them.
    How gladly will I offer you sacrifice,
    and praise your name, for it is good,
    for it has rescued me from all my troubles.

    Psalm 61 CEB

    God, listen to my cry;
    pay attention to my prayer!
    When my heart is weak,
    I cry out to you
    from the very ends of the earth.
    Lead me to the rock
    that is higher than I am
    because you have been my refuge,
    a tower of strength
    in the face of the enemy.
    Please let me live in your tent forever!
    Please let me take refuge
    in the shelter of your wings!
    Because, you, God,
    have heard my promises;
    you've given me the same possession
    as those who honor your name.
    Add days to the king's life!
    Let his years extend
    for many generations!
    Let him be enthroned forever
    before God!
    Make it so love and faithfulness
    watch over him!
    Then I will sing praises
    to your name forever,
    and I will do what I promised
    every single day.

    Psalm 61 NJB

    God, hear my cry,
    listen to my prayer.
    From the end of the earth I call
    to you with fainting heart.
    Lead me to the high rock
    that stands far out of my reach.
    For you are my refuge,
    a strong tower against the enemy.
    Let me stay in your tent for ever,
    taking refuge in the shelter
    of your wings!
    For you, God, accept my vows,
    you grant me the heritage
    of those who fear your name.
    Let the king live on and on,
    let his years continue age after age.
    May his throne be always in God's
    presence, your faithful love and
    constancy watch over him.
    Then I shall always sing to your name,
    day after day fulfilling my vows.

    Let God grant us grace and bless us;
    let God make his face shine on us,
    so that your way becomes known on earth,
    so that your salvation becomes known among
    all the nations.
    Let the people thank you, God!
    Let all the people thank you!
    Let the people celebrate
    and shout with joy
    because you judge the nations fairly
    and guide all nations on the earth.
    Let the people thank you, God!
    Let all the people thank you!
    The earth has yielded its harvest.
    God blesses us ---our God blesses us!
    Let God continue to bless us;

    May God show kindness and bless us,
    and make his face shine on us.
    Then the earth will acknowledge your ways,
    and all nations your power to save.
    Let the nations praise you, God,

    Psalm 70 CEB

    Hurry, God, to deliver me;
    hurry, Lord, to help me!
    Let those who seek my life
    be ashamed and humiliated!
    Let them fall back and be disgraced ---
    those people who delight
    in my downfall!
    Let those who say, "Aha! Aha!"
    stop because of their shameful
    behavior.
    But let all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you,
    and let those who love your saving help
    say again and again:
    "God is great!"
    But me? I'm poor and needy.
    Hurry to me, God!
    You are my helper and my deliver.
    Oh, Lord, don't delay!

    Psalm 70 REB

    Make haste and save me, God:
    Lord come quickly to my help.
    Let those who seek my life
    be discomfited and dismayed,
    let those who desire my hurt be turned
    back in disgrace;
    let those who cry 'Hurrah!'
    withdraw in their shame.
    But let all who seek you
    be jubilant and rejoice in you:
    and may those who long for your saving
    aid
    forever cry, 'All glory to God!'

    But I am oppressed and poor;
    God, come quickly to me.
    You are my help and my deliverer;
    Lord, do not delay.

    Psalm 82 CEB

    God takes his stand in the divine council;
    he gives judgment among the gods :
    "How long will you judge unjustly
    by granting favor to the wicked?
    Give justice to the lowly and the orphan;
    maintain the right of the poor
    and the destitute!
    Rescue the lowly and the needy.
    Deliver them
    from the power of the wicked!"

    They don't know; they don't understand;
    they wander around in the dark.
    All the earth's foundations shake.

    I hereby declare, "You are gods,
    children of the Most High -- all of you!
    But you will die like mortals;
    you will fall down like any prince."

    Rise up, God! Judge the earth
    because you hold all nations
    in your possession!

    Psalm 82 NLT

    God presides over heaven's court;
    he pronounces judgement on the
    heavenly beings:
    "How long will you hand down unjust decisions
    by favoring the wicked?
    "Give justice to the poor and the orphan;
    uphold the rights of the oppressed
    and the destitute.
    Rescue the poor and helpless;
    deliver them from the grasp
    of evil people.
    But these oppressors know nothing;
    they are so ignorant!
    They wander about in darkness,
    while the whole world is shaken
    to the core.
    I say, "You are gods;
    you are all children of the Most High.
    But you will die like mere mortals
    and fall like every other ruler."
    Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,
    for all the nations belong to you.

    Psalm 87 CEB

    God's foundation is set on the holy mountains.
    The Lord loves Zion's gates more than all
    of Jacob's houses combined.
    Glorious things are said about you,
    the city of God!
    I count Rahab and Babel among among
    those who know me; also Philistia and Tyre,
    along with Cush ---each of these was born there.
    And of Zion it is said: "Each person was born
    in it, but the one who will establish it
    is the Most High."
    The Lord makes a record as he registers
    the peoples:
    "Each one was born there."
    And while they dance, people sing:
    "The source of my life comes from you."

    Psalm 87 NIV

    He has founded his city on the holy mountain.
    The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than
    all the other dwellings of Jacob.
    Glorious things are said of you, city of God :
    "I will record Rahab and Babylon among those
    who acknowledge me -- Philistia and Tyre,
    along with Cush -- and will say, 'This one
    was born in Zion.' "
    Indeed, of Zion it will be said, "This one
    and that one were born in her, and
    the Most High himself will establish her."
    The Lord will write in the register
    of the peoples: "This one was born in Zion."
    As they make music they will sing,
    "All my fountains are in you."

    In the case of Psalm 87, I actually find myself preferring the CEB, over the NIV (which, I must admit, rather surprised me).

    The Lord rules!
    He is robed in majesty ---
    the Lord is robed,
    clothed with strength.
    Yes, he set the world firmly in place;
    it won't be shaken.
    Your throne is set firm
    for a very long time.
    You are eternal!
    Lord, the floods have raised up ---
    the floods have raised up their voices;
    the floods raise up a roar!
    But mightier than the sound
    of much water,
    mightier than the sea's waves,
    mighty on high is the Lord!
    Your laws are so faithful.
    Holiness decorates your house, Lord,
    for all time.

    Psalm 93 NET Bible

    The Lord reigns!
    He is robed in majesty,
    the Lord is robed,
    he wears strength around his waist.
    Indeed, the world is established, it cannot be
    moved.
    Your throne has been secure from ancient
    times;
    you have always been king.
    The waves roar, O Lord,
    the waves roar,
    the waves roar and crash.
    Above the sound of the surging water,
    and the mighty waves of the sea,
    the Lord sits enthroned in majesty.
    The rules you set down are completely
    reliable.
    Holiness aptly adorns your house, O Lord,
    forever.
