I did not say the word of god was not nice. You're twisting my words.

The Golden Compass is not a movie I would see, so we agree there. Yet that doesn't men someone who sees it, and enjoys it, is not one of God's. That is not our determination to make. The verse you offered is very general, and never addresses the Golden Compass. It reminds me of that verse "avoid the appearance of evil" which is twisted often by Christians to coincide with their personal preferences.

It's tempting, and the thought crosses my mind often that people who watch certain movies must not be saved. I can't see how anyone can watch others in their shame, ripping their clothes with in front of strangers for $$. Usually they are mentally sick people who have been abused by others. Watching porn, viewing racy magazines, etc...should incite our pity for that person, not lust. These folks need our prayers.

Pray for gekko instead. :praying: He or She is a 20 year old kid, only a few years older than my son.

2 Timothy 2:19 "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity

Only the Lord knoweth them that are his, no one else else

(Btw, Matt 7:20 is a warning about false teachers)

    Good verse.

Let him that nameth the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.

Do you not think going to a movie that was made by an athiest
and has Yahweh killed in the last installment is iniquity?

2 Chronicles 19:10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.

Do you not think that we are not supposed to warn people anymore?

Proverbs 4:14-15 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

I believe we are to warn people, and you are very good at that. That is a compliment. Maybe you read my post squawking vehemently about a Christmas show many BBer's counted as their favorite a few weeks or so ago.

Your verse is perfect. I read it with anticipation hoping the OP will hear you, but was let down with the comment I referred to. You offer great support then add your own conclusions which somehow always seem to indicate that person is not a child of God.

I am concerned it will defeat the purpose. You have so much to offer, so much biblical knowledge. You're one of the smart ones. If you could just tone it down, I think you would have even more of an impact here than you or I could ever imagine.

    Just curious...

Do you think God wants us to tone it down?

    Well...yes

    1. See when Jacob approaches the shepherds at the well, he refers to them as “my brothers.” He considered them his brothers first, then later rebukes them. Genesis 29:4

    2. We should love one another as Jesus loves us. This is how people know we are His disciples. John 13:34&35

    3. Love your neighbor as yourself, not hating him. This doesn't = keeping quiet about his sins. It means rebuke him without seeking personal vengeance. Seek to help him. Hate the sin, love the sinner. Leviticus 19:17,18

KJV- Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
"Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I [am] the LORD"

    4. Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.

Ahhh, but consider Paul who withstood Peter to his face because of his error.

Consider Jesus who drove the moneychangers out of the temple, not with words only, but with a scourge.

Consider Balaam who was rebuked for his iniquity.

Consider Paul's instructions in the second epistle to Timothy in which we read:

2 Timothy 4:2-4 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Speak the truth in love, yes. But in doing so, we must never be slack in reproof, rebuke, correction and instruction.

Peter was an apostle, he had an important job. He wasn't suppose to screw up but he did. AND Jesus forgave him. Jesus treated him well though he screwed up. And Peter was saved, so there you go.

He's Jesus remember. He's sinless perfection. You can do the same when you become sinless perfection but by that time, no one will be around you deserving rebuke hopefully

Balaam knew better. This is a BB board, and you were talking to a 20 year old kid who is not quite as advanced as Balaam. This kid is no prophet like Balaam was.

Yes, but somewhere, and you have it memorized probably, it uses the word wise rebuke. Post that verse ok.

No where does it mean we are to come to our own conclusions like "The Bible should convince those who are God's to not go see the movie" or that I said the word of God is not nice (paraphrase)

Leviticus 19:17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.

Another good verse. It states that you are to correct your neighbor so you are not guilty of sinning along with him.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

    2 Timothy 3:2
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

    2 Timothy 3:3
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

    2 Timothy 3:4
    Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

    2 Timothy 3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

The author of this trilogy is a known atheist. Before running off to see this movie, one needs to use godly wisdom and discernment. 2 Timothy 3:5 is a warning to "turn away" from such things--not "run to" them.

==No, but only because I am not into those kinds of movies. I did not watch Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia (etc) for the exact same reason.

sure the author made the books just cause he didn't like c.s. lewis and all that maybe.

well the characters name probably isn't Yahweh - i've never read the books myself though - i wouldn't mind reading them though.

i was told it was some angel named god.
and gets killed in the end.

    probably largely symbolic yeah.

    but it's a story. it's fiction.
the author is expressing his opinion in book form.

just as c.s. lewis and tolkien did in theirs.

    fiction is not real.
    give it a break people.

This story is not just fiction, but it is also allegorical. The message is against all that is God.

snopes.com has investigated interviews by the author, in them, Yahweh God is killed. The author states this as fact.

Bet when people stand before God they won't tell Him to give it a break.

    it may be allegorical.

    but it's still fiction.

if it's fiction. who cares if it's allegorical.

    not me.

So you do not think that God cares if people who name the name of the Lord go to see movies in which He is killed in the end?

Proverbs 3:5-7 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

I likely will not see it. However, I may go check the books out of the local library and read them so I can speak intelligently about their content and debunk the false view of Christianity/God that the author tries to paint (following the suggested approach given by the review in Christianity Today).

now you're mixing fiction with non-fiction. lol.

it's not God himself that's killed in the end. it's some fictional character by the same name.

allegorically killed? fictionally killed? who knows.

you think that God cares about using the lion the witch and the wardrobe as proper illustration of the gospel? heck it has a witch in it.

i don't know if God cares if a fictional character named "god" gets killed in the end.. i think that a false god being killed off is kind of a good thing is it not?

i'm speaking allegorically of course. haha.

Apparently you do not know how to correctly read reviews of actual interviews...

Pullman has left little doubt about his books' intended thrust in discussion of his works, such as noting in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God" and in a 2001 interview that he was "trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." - snopes.com

You can claim all you want that the Yahweh in the movie is not the God of the Christian faith, but the author of the story himself said that is who it is intended to be.

Pullman does not hold back in proclaiming his hatred for the God I serve. I will not hold back in proclaiming those who support him to be in grave error.

The god depicted in the Golden Compass bears no resemblance to God in actuality. One could argue that moral responsibility would require killing the god of the Golden Compass.
