Many think that the fleet at Pearl Harbor were the first ships to be fired on during WWII.

However, three months earlier, German U-Boat fired upon an American Destroyer.

This incident was the subject of FDR's next fireside chat.

Thanks for posting this. I'd never heard of the "Greer Incident". I'll have to look up that fireside chat and listen to it, if it's available.

I've been listening to the fireside chats, in order, from 1933 (Bank crisis) going forward. Very interesting. FDR had a way of being plain-spoken so even uneducated people could understand him, though at times he seems condescending.
