This sunday morning I preached a sermon against the Television, and all the garbage that is played on it.

For some reason Baptists have accepted this one pet sin of watching television and movies which I believe is probably hurting the cause of Christ morethan any other one thing in America.

Yes, some people fall into sin because of internet porn and chatrooms, but the television is something that if affecting 99% or more of Christians across America. When are we going to wake up and realize that the devil and the world should not control our entertainment and our children's minds?

The sermon ends with me demolishing a 27" television with a baseball bat. You can hear it here:

    Sincerely,

    Pastor Steven L Anderson

Yes, the battle for the mind is where the victory is won, or the Christian is defeated.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Rom. 12:1-2

Of course that being said, I would still rather watch my Steelers on the tube than listen to them on the radio. ;)

Why would you preach a sermon against an electronic signal receiver?

Televisions aren't evil. Programming can be.

Mr. Anderson, do you plan to destroy the computer that you typed your post on?

By the way...bats are evil, and a tool of the devil.

Come to my church next week and watch me destroy a bat with a 27" TV.

I had a preacher friend once who pointed out "NO, there's nothing evil about a television..until you PLUG IT IN!"

    (I haven't had one since 1980.)

Everybody...be SURE and listen to the last 4-5 minutes of this "sermon." (from 30:30 through 34:47) And then pray for this "pastor's" family.

This guy destroys a TV...violently...with NO warning. He seriously scares a kid (you hear them crying in the background). According to Mr. Anderson, this is to be done if your wife or kids ask, "Why do we need to get rid of the TV?"

This isn't about TV or not. Mr. Anderson, I am now officially scared of what you are doing.

You are SERIOUSLY DISTURBED. I'm praying for your family. YOU NEED HELP. I am VERY worried about your wife and children. Do you abuse them?

Mods, if you need to remove this, OK, but I'm telling you...this guy is scary.

I think I will preach against the hellinet next week.

But I won't beat my computer with a baseball bat.

There is a MUCH broader spectrum of porn available at the click of a button on the net than on the telly.

Pastor Anderson, I challange you to treat your telly the same way you did that telly.

That is what I was thinking too. Perhaps he forgets that it is far more easier to view things that are immoral and ungodly on the commputer.

I am sure bashing a TV on the platform was real edifying and helped to change many people into the image of Christ.

    Pastor Anderson,

How about preaching somthing that is actually biblical for a change- like dealing with ones devotion to Christ and the desire to glorify God in their lives and then see what happens.

I preached on the holiness of God this morning from Isaiah 57 - I did not break any televisions at the end.

I wonder which has a bigger, long lasting, eternal impact, preaching on God's holiness or preaching against television?

Of course, I really don't expect any answer from the OP to that question.

Can you imagine advertising your sermon online this way?

"Pastor Steven L Anderson - Television - 04/02/06am Sunday (Includes Pastor Anderson demolishing a 27" Television with a baseball bat)
    "

Let's not forget the public libraries! Even if there were no TV, radio, or internet, there are still millions of trashy books that are easily checked out of our public library, and yes, kids can check them out too!

A more accurate account would be:

"'Pastor' Anderson--scaring a child in the congregation and encouraging violence in the homes of his church members."

I'm speechless...I'm seriously worried about this guy's family!

When you all listen to that part of the sermon...didn't the sheer violence and anger this guy unleashed scare the mess out of you? And you're supposed to do this...IN RESPONSE TO A QUESTION FROM YOUR WIFE AND KIDS?!?

This is a haunting, scary thing. I pray to God I'm overreacting. 'Cause if not...I don't even want to think about it.

Thank you JESUS for helping me get out of a similar church. I pray that the children being raised in that don't grow up being afraid of the true Gospel.

Steve, you are working to promote anger and hatred. If you want to teach that television is wrong, and really feel it's important to do so, here's a few ideas.

    1. Say it with words.

    2. Teach alternatives

    3. Do not associate lack of sin with the presence of violence

    4. Don't frighten little kids to teach them of the love of God

    5. Teach your people what right looks like, to love God, and sinful behavior will begin to stop.

I was in a church like yours, where appearances were focused on. Don't do this, don't do that, let's be loud and yell and scare the hell out of people.
It really messed me up. I grew to look just great, but I didn't grow an inch spiritually until I got in a church that said "this is who Jesus is, this is what he did, this is how he lived, this is what we imitate".
And it was spoken and taught, not yelled and screamed.
When you went to school and college, your teachers didn't yell and scream and act violently because it's not how people learn and mature. We don't yell and scream and act violently towards our children because that's not how they learn and grow.
What makes you think that if I'm at your feet to learn from you, I'm going to learn and grow if you yell and scream and act violently?

I won't. I will be afraid of you. I may be scared into acting right, but it will not come from my heart or out of love for Christ, it will come out of fear and I'll struggle to keep up the decent behavior. Teach me to love Christ, and my behavior will change for the good.

There are plenty of things a T.V. can be used for that is good! We watch videos of preachers and good (Godly) singing groups as well as Christian movies (the story of Joseph for instance). That certainly isn't sinful is it?

A television is an amoral object...being used for good and bad.

    You ask what amoral is...

    a·mor·al
    adj.
    1. Not admitting of moral distinctions or judgments; neither moral nor immoral.

I have to wonder if this is really a message that "God laid on his heart" or if it is just something he thought would get him more attention. That's a dangerous place to be!

Ok I listened to the sermon. I thought the opening letter was very good and had a lot of truth in it along with some of his points. I agree that TV isn't doing families or our country any good. for the first 15 years of being a christian and having children, I didn't have cable, (had only 1 channel) but did have that movie collection he was talking about. It is tough being in a society today when families live all over the country and neighbors no longer communicate and people in church are doing their own thing and women are now working outside of the home making close friendships hard. no wonder the TV becomes a replacement for the social needs once met by close relationships. And so has the computer, some people it looks like the computer is all they have.

So while I agree with his principles, I am very disturbed by the attitudes these kind of preachers have that they do not see are VERY harmful. No wonder satire sites like www.landoverbaptist.com are around.

    1) LEGALISM...Demanding a list of do's and don'ts in order to have favor with God or appear godly. Not in order to be saved, but to appear so. Gray area's the bible doesn't out right say are sin.

    2) JUDGMENTAL SPIRIT...Calling people names "fagot", "queers" "perverts" of course people who are NOT saved are sinners and no different that this preachers unsaved relatives who are not a "Queer" or "pervert" but sinners just the same. Nice to know he is teaching people in his congregation to HATE those who are not saved. amazing they are able to witness to these scums of the earth every week? (wonder how many actually are really saved and go to his church?)

    3) PHARISEE ATTITUDE...ARROGANT...
Look at me I am better than you since I do not do this or that.

    4) SCARY...Not fond of yelling preachers who manipulate and intimidate their congregation (especially young children) in order to push their philosophy. Showing fits of rage and anger is so edifying

    5) BRAINWASHING and CULT like mentality...This one is obvious if you listen to enough of these kinds of sermons.

to tell you the truth i stoped listening to the sermon before he smashed the TV. I really do not want to listen to it again. I will take your guys word for it.

    Frenchy,

I thought the last two posts by this Sanderson guy were actually stories from the Landover Baptist website! I never imagined that he was a real person who took himself seriously.

And what's with the hit-and-run posting? "Here's one of my sermons and some essays. I'll never be back or even attempt to defend any of my assertions, but here you have it."

Just have fun with this guy; he's entertaining.

ETA: TV is not evil, but it is quite stupid and banal. Read a book instead.
