    Bob Jones University hosted the University of Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team, in town for the NCAA Tournament. Team practice at Davis Field House (they lost to North Carolina on Sunday):

    With racial overtones in the past, along with a long history against intercollegiate sports, wondering if there was spinning in the grave . . .

    I for one was pleased to see this spirit. Picture lifted my heart. Thank you for sharing.

    If anyone is spinning, it's been going on for several years. It was perhaps 3 years back that then BJU president Stephen Jones issued a formal apology for the U's past actions concerning people of color. The full entry into intercollegiate athletics came about a year later, though they've had exhibition games with crosstown Furman for many years.

    I see after a few years of participation in a Christian college league, BJU is now trying to join the NCAA:

    What was the rationale for the school's longtime opposition to intercollegiate sports anyway? Was there more to it than the race thing?

    I found this quote from this webpage: "The Great Depression followed hard on its heels. Bob Jones College barely survived bankruptcy and its move to Cleveland, Tennessee in 1933. In the same year, the college also ended participation in intercollegiate sports."

    So it appears that they ended sports due to the Depression.



    I was once told that there had been betting on games a long, long time ago.

    Just received this Facebook PM from a grad of BJU:

    Mostly Booze..and now Drugs..if a visiting team were to come onto our Campus..it would be a Nightmare..our Cops would be overwhelmed. Berkley isn't Bob Jones..!

    When I was there ('70-'72), the story I heard was that when the school was young they had intercollegiate sports, but the townspeople in the stands would smoke and drink, leaving their trash behind them, which was unacceptable.

    I'm waiting for the MBU Sabercats to meet the BJU Bruins. It will probably be at a soccer tournament.
