Roger, I quite remember that slight. It was his and other nationalists' shortsightedness that kept the Republic out of the war and thus deprived them of help from the Marshall Plan. I can only assume they thought Washington should have sent a couple of regiments of regulars to help kick the crown out. Since we didn't, by their lights we're British lackeys.

Yes, I understand the president is only the figurehead. However, the then current prime minister (I won't try for the Gaelic form) can either approve or disapprove of his actions. (to put it simply)

In theory that is true, the Taoiseach has that power. But in practice the president stays out of politics completely. He or she is simply 'Ireland's First Ambassador.'

Our "president" just handed Libya over to Al Qaeda. And word has it a whole bunch of surface to air missiles got lost in the shuffle. Go team!

Nothing like our founding fathers. Our founding fathers recognized the Crown, submitted to the crown, and for years petitioned for abuses to cease. They did not consider themselves a law unto themselves, they considered the Crown to be subject to the laws of Nature and in violation thereof. When the answers to their petitions were more abuses and the increase of troops, it was obvious that the Crown was no longer their guardian, but their tyrant, and tyrants are not legitimate rulers.

To act as true guardians of their citizens, the magistrates, not the mobs, severed the ties with England.

Roger, please clarify. I thought like any other British style parliamentary government; The French are different. the President doesn't make a move without the PM's go ahead. Though in the case of Dev's signing Hitler's condolence book and not FDR's, he takes the fall and not some forgotten in time (unless your a citizen of the Republic) Taoiseach.

As 'Ireland's First Ambassador' Dev takes the fall because of the book of condolence situation. It was not a government decision. The blame for the collapse of the Irish economy is not on Mary McAleese but on Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowan.

Mrs McAleese is leaving office a hero despite the mess Ireland is in.

I had the honour of meeting Mrs McAleese a couple of years ago at the opening of a Teen Challenge home. She defines class.

I'd blame it on Fenian short sightedness. They were so Anglo-phobic. They didn't figure out a way to collect some of those American dollars sloshing around during WW2, And after the war, they'd have been in position to collect some money from the Marshall Plan. Buuut nooo, so they didn't have the finances to unbury the Republic from all those years of English occupation.

Well ain't this cozy. Is C4's constant indictment of America and American conservatism okay with this board?

Having known Roger for quite some time. I think I can say he is not in favor of the new Irish president. Nor does this thread have much of anything to do with American politics.

Ireand's economy boomed with marks and francs, and the euro. She did not actually need any dollars. The partnership Fianna Fail, the banks, and land developers brought about the collapse. They all made their money and rode out of Dodge leaving everyone else with the bill.

The problem with this election was that no one on the game was the caliber of the last two.

I've seen his posts for quite some time, and whether he likes the new president or not, he is constantly accusing America, and is intollerant of any conservative gain whatever demanding faultless perfection of conservatives and conservative Christians alike while at the same time appealing for the espousal of socialistic doctine and indulgence of the glaring abuses of liberals.

It's rather sickening. But enjoy your little chat over inconsequential politics of the tiny little island.
