What exactly are meant by the words "And if thy right eye offends thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish and not that thy whole body should be cast in hell"?

I think it is an illustration, not to be taken literally, showing the relationship of the evils of sin.

    Cheers,

OK Jim, sin is bad. God sees it, & in the sight of god it is awful, foul, ugly, filthy, Sin in the heart. Right? But isnt this kinda an implication that we do not know our own hearts while our Lord is calling for a pure heart?

It means whatever there is in your life that is tempting you or causing you to sin, get rid of it. If you're tempted by someone at your work that may lead to having an affair, quit your job.
If you are making money by cheating or breaking laws, stop it and take a minimum wage job if you have to that's honest.
Whatever is coming between you and God, get rid of it. Even though you may lose earthly things, you will gain heavenly treasure, even the saving of your soul.
