    The Topic question is:

the NKJV based on same texts as KJV?

Ed's Answer is: Yes, the nKJV is based on
the same texts as the KJV.
Both the nKJV and KJV translators used all the
original language resources that they could. When
there were potentially conflicting sources, both
sets of Translators performed Critical Analysis
on which was the most likely correct source.
There were more original language sources available
to the translators of the nKJV in the late 1970s as
there were availalbel to the KJV translators in
the late Sixteen-oughts. Both sets of translaters
documented their decisions in margin notes:
    the KJV Translators in the outer left/right margins;
the nKJV Translators at the bottom margin. The nKJV
translation did give preference to the Textus Receptus
documents including some places where the KJV didn't
    use the TR sources.

Personally my most used nKJV came wrapped in the
'New Schofield Study Bible'. That Bible also had footnotes
that were Schofields adjusted notes (NOT adjusted
by Schofield but by the executors of his estate) and
Bible Comentary. In 1963 I'd married a girl who had
Schofields first-run notes in with one of the KJVs
for the Bible text. So I thought that it would be
good to study the Schofield notes again. Well anyway, I
didn't drop the nKJV because a new, more ear tingling,
translation came along. I dropped that nKJV because I
spilled my Sunday School coffee while studying like
1 Corinthians 11. All the Bible after that chapter 11 had
    coffee stains.

It is evident that the NKJV belongs on the same line, stream, or tree of good Bibles with Tyndale's, Coverdale's, Matthew's, Great, Whittingham's, Geneva, Bishops', and KJV.
