The Preaching I Was Raised Under

    Growing up in NC, I heard lots of camp-meeting style preachers and preaching. Some favorites were H.L. Mickle, Maze Jackson ("the young man with the old message"; a tag-line he used long after he was a young man!!!), Harold Sightler, (on one occasion) Shorty Moser, and John Long.

    Those men used captivating stories and vivid images to touch the hearts of people. They used things that were common and to which people could relate so that they did not lecture; they communicated. To me, they were doing what Jesus did when he preached. Using the familiar to point men to God.

    I've been privileged to get more theological training than those men had, but I keep them in mind and strive to preach in such a way that people can understand the message.
