I wasn't sure where to put this, so I hope here is alright.
I know there are somepeople who take Star Wars seriouly(knew a christian man who got his phylosphy(sp?) for life from them and saw nothing wrong with it), but good grief, some of these people were serious.
Theres also some related srticles lisred at the bottom.

Ya know, when I think of people who take things like Star Wars too seriously, well, we know the types. THe ones who wear their light sabers to the supermarket. I can only say one thing:

Remaining a virgin until marriage is a great thing. But it should be out of choice, not out of the fact that you can't get a date.

In the recent Australian census A movement wanted to have Jedi listed on the optional religion componant! It had happened in New Zealand that a number of people had deliberatley typed in Jedi for a laugh. However it was deemed not to be a bona fide religion and scrapped.

I have heard that George Lucas is a Christian, can anyone confirm or deny this?

A quote from http://www.abc.net.au/news/2002/08/item20020827073051_1.htm "Then you probably have 15,000 people who did it just to give the Government a bit of curry."

I doubt there would be too many in Oz actually serious about it. I considered doing it myself as a stir [IMG]

I think I have mentioned on board before that Aussies have a healthy (or unhealthy) disregard for authority ;)

Ben, I don't know about, haven't heard, if so it sure doesn't turn up in any influence in his movies.

Titus, I'm affraid there are people who are serious about it, some may done it for a joke because of the email they recieved, but some people are serious.Thats sad. As from the little bit I wrote about the man I knew, it had become a religion to him, even though he did not reconize it as such.

Unfortunately there are people that can take something with no apparrant sinfulness and cause it to look bad. For instance, money all on its own isn't bad, but when someone becomes greedy, and jealous of others good fortune, then it becomes sinful.

I enjoy the movies and have read many of the books. Pure fiction through and through.

Lucas is a Buddhist. Star Wars is Science Fiction. There are nuts like me who love the movie, dress up for the movies, and are married happily. Then, there are psychos who want to make this their religion. They are a very small minority of the Star Wars fans. This is not endorsed by Lucas and is not his fault. As a matter of fact, if Lucas were to meet one of these people, he would probably say that they need to not take the movie so seriously and maybe seek psychiatric help.

Lighten up folks. This is not that serious.

Interestingly Ron Hubbards religion of scientology started off as Science Fiction books also. I have also heard that he openly confessed that it was a money making excersize.

I had a friend in college who was convinced he was a Jedi, even though he was never able to use the jedi mind trick or telekinetic powers.

I once worked with someone who went on to work at ILM, who passes on that Lucas holds to Christian beliefs.

George Lucas is incredibly quiet about his faith. Not surprising, since he's incredibly silent and protective about pretty much any aspect of his personal life. Ask him about his children and he may quarter you with a lightsaber.

I've heard little tidbits about some aspects of his Star Wars movies having their origins in Christianity, Buddhism, and even Native American beliefs. He has said he's indeed borrowed from religious cultures, but again, has never expanded too much on the thought. Many think he might be a Buddhist because he had speant some time in his youth studying the Buddhist philosophy in depth. It should also be noted that many things in the Buddhist philosophies are also prevalent in the Christian philosophy, but it's more "exotic" for armchair movie ctitics to attribute them to Buddhism.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

On a Top Ten Signs You Are A Star Wars Fanatic list I came across on web going back a bit, #1 was "You can actually move things with the force" [IMG]

I think before Jedism gets official religion status the "jedis" should demonstrate their abilities to prove their claim....Then again, as mentioned by someone in posts above, scientology gets by without proof :D

    Katie,
Both Star Wars and Star Trek are science fiction--the religions seen(also made up) can be taken to the extreme. I heard of one goon who thought he needed to broaden his mission scope to other languages--and believed with all his heart that God was leading him to study "Klingonese"--half his sermons were done in English--the other half was done in Klingon!! As Scottie would tell Captain Kirk, "I should have left them in the Transporter, Captain!!"

Anybody should know that you cannot "transport" anything by "scramblin'" their matter into anti-matter--then unscramblin' them again in another location!! But its fun to hear Scottie and Kirk talk--"Scottie!! I need you to beam me up NOW!!(monster or whatever is chasin' Kirk here!!) and Scottie says, "I can't, Captain! Why, with the Matter/Anti-Matter transducer shot---I can't even beam up a fly!!"

My boy has several "Light Sabers" at $20 a pop!! Made of plastic!! You ever try to hit your daddy with a light beam comin' from a flashlight?? Doesn't hurt, does it?? Try hittin' your daddy with a plastic "Light Sabre"--and you'll get yourself a spankin'!!

    Your friend,
    Blackbird

Steven Hart, writing for Salon, finds the link between Star Wars and mythology mostly after-the-fact gas. The real source, he says, is modern American science fiction. Attributing the themes to Joseph Campbell sounded better than the truth, he says.

I'm told that a either a government agency or a university with government funding has come up with a precurser to a transporter, where photons go in one device and come out another one at a different location. Of course, that's light years (or should I say 'warp factors') away from a trek-type matter transporter. But it is interesting nonetheless.

An article from the link jedi.org posted by Katie!

The history of the path of Jediism traverses thought which is well over 5,000 years old. It shares many themes embraced in Hinduism, Confucionism, Buddhism, Gnosticism, Stoicism, Catholicism, Taoism, Shinto, Modern Mysticism, the Way of the Shaolin Monks, the Knight's Code of Chivalry and the Samurai Warriors.

Didn't Paul run into those same people on Mars Hill?... To the Unknown God him I declare unto you!... I guess they never learn!... Brother Glen
