John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

In this text, the sin/τὴν ἁμαρτίαν is singular. Though a few English translations render it "sins" plural, by far most of them translate it singular into English.

What is the significance, if any, of "sin" being singular in this statement? What is "the sin" of the world?

I found this in my notes. Sin = lawlessness. World =

41.38 κόσμοςc, ου m; αἰώνc, ῶνος m: the system of practices and standards associated with secular society (that is, without reference to any demands or requirements of God)—‘world system, world’s standards, world.’

Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains (electronic ed. of the 2nd edition., Vol. 1, p. 507). New York: United Bible Societies.

    TDNT Entry
an apt and harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government
ornament, decoration, adornment, i.e. the arrangement of the stars, 'the heavenly hosts', as the ornament of the heavens. 1 Pet. 3:
    the world, the universe
the circle of the earth, the earth
the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family
the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ
world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly
the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc, which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ
any aggregate or general collection of particulars of any sort
the Gentiles as contrasted to the Jews (Rom. 11:12 etc)
    of believers only, John 1:29; 3:16; 3:17; 6:33; 12:47 1 Cor. 4:9; 2 Cor. 5:19

    2. When what is constructed consists of people, we find the sense of “human order,” e.g., of rowers, of an army, or of a city or state.

    Kittel, G., Friedrich, G., & Bromiley, G. W. (1985). Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (p. 460). Grand Rapids, MI: W.B. Eerdmans.

So I would think Jesus accomplishes this in the saved world of the New Heavens and earth.

Would you then identify "the sin" of John 1:29 as inherited Adamic sin?

How can you say no to a direct quote from the word of God?

loDebar - Do you you realize you said "no" to the word of God? No I'm sure you didn't really mean it that way.

Romans 5:12 - "entered into the world" a prepositional phrase - apparently the sin of satan's pride was isolated from "the world" until the temptation in the garden of Eden.

You misread the scripture, Sin entered the WORLD thought Adam, the physical world, as Adam was both physical and spiritual.
But sin already existed before Adam.

Sin is not through Adam or the physical . We are responsible for our own sin only

IoDebar yes we are responsible for our own actual sins but according to Romans 5:12 both sin and death were passed on through Adam.

    All the verbs are aorist.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

    sin entered
    death passed
    all sinned

We were all there when Adam sinned (inherited sin sometimes called "original" sin - a misnomer as you pointed out) that is why we all die (with a couple of recorded exceptions).

Humans bodies die , souls are eternal. Death to the soul is separation from God.

    Eze 18:20

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear theiniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

nor can we count on the faithfulness of our fathers

    Eze 14:20

Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

The cross was the separation of God from the Godhead, spiritual "death" (Why has though forsaken me?). This paid for the SIN, total complete, one time event. The cross was also the physical death of Jesus which allows us to share in this blood and received a pardon, We can only participate in this pardon if all sin forever was forgiven.

So is it correct to understand you are saying there is nothing hereditary about depravity and death?

Depravity existed before Adam. It is not physical.

Death, physical death is because sin entered the physical world and thus the curse through Adam's sin

Sin is spiritual. A horse cannot sin. A human can sin without using a body, Jesus said "adultery in his heart"

I would see it more as all of us as being found and judged by God to be guilty by being in Adam now!
