The Values of our New Miss America

On September 22, 2001, Katie Harman was crowned Miss America and accepted the responsibility for representing a country in recovery from the September 11th attacks. With the platform of supporting patients with terminal breast cancer, she is a passionate woman who involves God in every aspect of life.

See her response to the question: How do you deal with the inherent grief and death that goes along with your platform {providing support for terminal breast cancer patients}?

I know the hope that God gives me. I know that I have hope in my life, but when I can convey that to other people, that is when I give them hope. And my faith in God, knowing that He will never leave me. He will never forsake me. If I can portray that same hope to someone else, that is how my faith plays a part. I have confidence that God is always there and the number one thing that patients need -- especially when they're dealing with terminal breast cancer -- is knowing that someone is there for them. So often we don't know what to say to a patient who's dying. We're afraid that we're gonna say or do something wrong, and so we leave their lives. That gets really hard for Americans to deal with, especially because, it's just, we want to think that we're never gonna die.

That's a joy to read. Thanks for sharing that. I have a problem with spending whatever amount of hours it is on watching young ladies parade themselves around, however, so I didn't watch the competition.

But I'm REALLY glad for her statement of faith. That is a heartwarmer. Thanks again.

Good lookin' out. Hopefully she can realize and convince other young ladies that God does not believe we have to fit societies model of what beauty is.

    Until next Post, Adam

I've been trying to dig up the local newspaper article that dealt with Miss America, the pageant and the winner.

I thought I had read that the new Miss America, Katie Harmon, is a student at BYU and is a Mormon????

My mistake! She is a student at Portland State University. (The BYU student is our new Miss Arizona).

However, I do believe I read that the new Miss America is Mormon. Can anyone do a search and verify that she either is or is not?

This is one of the articles I found.
I think it was the only one addressing her faith. Does not mention mormonism tho, so this is not really an answer

Actually, that does answer my question. Foursquare churches are Pentecostal holiness. She is, therefore, most definitely not Mormon.

While this may seem trivial, it is a relief to some degree. Many former Miss Americas are Mormon and the church capitalizes on their success to attempt to legitimize themselves.

You just can't read an article here about Miss Arizona without the mention of her "devout Mormon faith". But several years ago, when Miss Arizona was a fellow student with me and was a Southern Baptist, that fact was rarely, if ever, mentioned, even when she went to great lengths to speak openly of her Christian faith in almost every interview with the media.

I appreciate her statement of faith, but I have a bit of a problem with her bearing her body to the world as a means of obtaining a prize.

Ellis, are you very familiar with the Foursquare Church? Not so much that I am interested in details of their belief system, but that participating in a Miss America contest does not fit the belief system of most Pentecostal/Holiness churches with which I am familiar.

Lastly, it does seem to me that media is not as interested (for whatever reason) in keying of the faith of a person that is a "mainline" Christian.

Are you familiar with the Miss America who was deaf, danced ballet, and was a Christian?
Her name escapes me, but I read her story and that, my friend, was one thing that has impacted my life forever.

    In Christ's gracious love,
    Teresa

I think it's great that as a Christian Miss America can convey that beauty is thru Jesus and that fashion is cool but what really shines is Jesus.
