The point was made that we have a constitution with checks and balances and separation of powers so therefore an authoritarian could not rise to power here. I pointed out that Germany had all of this too but it didn't prevent Hitler's rise.

I didn't say Trump was Hitler. I didn't say Trump was going to overthrow the constitutional government here. I would have posted the same thing as a counter argument to the idea that our Constitution inherently protects us against totalitarianism in 2010 or 2005 or 1996 or 1990 or 1984. It wouldn't matter who was President.
