I agree with you LE, but disagreeing even in the slightest with some on the right on this board will get you labeled as an Obama lover.

What happens if it's a split family? Divorced? Multi-religion family? I'm more for individuals deciding than the govt., but this one is problematic. These are still our fighting men and women and deserve more dignitiy than being turned into a public spectacle.

    Someone Please Explain

why everyone who joins the Army and gets himself killed is a "hero?" To convince other people to enlist and get themselves killed?

Let us know when you're done spitting on the grave of our soldiers.

You make despicable statements on here quite often...perhaps this is the worst.

    1) I believe that when government sensors things from the people it is not in the peoples best interest.

    2) I saw Gates on an interview about this. He basically said that he never felt very comfortable with the prior policy. So not only does allowing families to decide for themselves feel right to me but I trust his judgment on this matter. He is a lot closer to the strong feelings of those affected by it than I.

Valid point. My thoughts would be that one of the consequences of divorce is there is much added pain and problems that come because of it. Do we, or maybe I should say should we make policy decisions that impacts everyone based on that or because of that?

In the old days, the the judge could say, "Army or jail." Now days the Army is recruiting felons. The doper gangs are well represented on military bases. Are they all heros?

Feel free to go somewhere else, where your freedoms are not defended by brave men and women.

They are heroes, to defend someone as unappreciative as yourself.

I saw it just the opposite, I thought it was dignifying to pay tribute to our warriors who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Why should we sneak them back in the country like they did something wrong? I see the flag draped coffins as a symbol of courage and sacrifice to those who gave their full measure. As a vet, I salute them.

However I leave the decision to the family just like they have the choice of burying them in a national or private cemetery.

    Aint that the truth.

To the thread here it is obviously the family's choice. But did the families of the soldiers in the photo in the article give their consent? All it says is:

AFP PHOTO/HANDOUT/THE MEMORYHOLE.ORG/RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE =GETTY OUT= (Photo credit should read HO/AFP/Getty Images)

    What does that mean?

    Huh?

I agree with you and LE, but 'disagreeing with some on the right on this board will get you labeled as an Obama lover' ....... is true but only by the left, so far, will we be labeled thusly.....

Funny, they (the socialist left) would see this as a litmus test as approval of Obama..... but the abortion issue was not an appropriate litmus test for choosing not to vote for him.

BTW, This sounds more like its a national policy....... because for months and years now, our local news has been showing the return of the dead to our area. Maybe it has something to do with the bases and military cemetary in this area: Maybe it has something to do with the family getting in touch with the local t.v. station. I don't know. But the local stations have shown some..... not all.... of the return of soldiers killed in action to the families of those here locally.

I think generally it is more appropriate on a local news. For the national news.... even with family approval...... how can it be fair? Will all returning soldiers killed in action that have their families' approve of news reports be given a spot..... or a selective few be chosen and highlighted in the interest of time..... and audience appeal?

I don't think it's a spectacle but a very powerful visual. I think we need to see the very real cost of war. Hawks and Doves both have agendas and propaganda. I never want us to forget the sacrifices made. Our hearts need to ache and weigh heavy and consider the worth of a life when we see those pictures - a much more powerful statement than a line in a newspaper.
