I'm now reading Volume 5 of the 6-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson, written by noted American historian Dumas Malone. It's interesting that Jefferson, while claiming a belief in God but not claiming the deity of Christ, was despised by the New England clergy (primarily Anglicans and Congregationalists) for allegedly being a hedonist and an atheist who would try to confiscate all Bibles in America. Yet because Jefferson firmly believed in freedom of religion, the Baptists in America generally supported his presidency with enthusiasm.
