Thoughts on Tony Dungy (NFL coach)?

    Ok,

Today some coworkers thought I was rather wrong in what I said.

Someone mentioned Tony Dungy, and I just (well, sorta sarcastically as I'm tired of all these "NFL Christians") mentioned I didn't really feel like hearing about them anymore.

I don't know too much about Tony Dungy, but, from what I have heard and read, his form of Christianity is more like your average big-church, Christianity.

He says he accepted Christ in his early years, then wondered away, then was revived later on. (just google "Tony Dungy" and "testimony" and I'm sure you'll find a few copies of it).

I was just curious what others think? I understand sometimes people have to miss church due to work, but the whole NFL lifestyle, associations, etc. doesn't it sorta alarm you when someone proclaiming Christ is so intertwined in the NFL?

I don't know anyone's heart, but as I said to my coworkers, the world is getting more and more religious, yet further away from true Christianity, so I'm always very leary of many "celebrity Christians" especially since we have had Dion Sanders, "M C" Hammer (who has diverted back to perverted rap music, if you don't believe me, go to video.google.com and search for some of his newer music videos, I would post a link, but don't want it to POLLUTE these message boards ;) )

Am I out in left-field here, or do others agree with me?

    You have 2 separate questions.
    1. Thoughts about Tony Dungy: Living near Tampa Bay where he coached for 4 years, we know him to be a strong believer. His love for Jesus, his membership and attendance at a good Bible believing Baptist church and his testimony in the community show this.

    2. Thought about celebrity christians: I would agree. We are too easily take in by just thinking that if someone mentions "God" they must be a believer.

About Tony Dungy? You are out in left field. He is the most sincere sports celebrity believer I can think of. Did you see the full page ad he and Lovie Smith took out in the USA Today the Saturday before the Super Bowl?

And what lifestyle would that be? The one that is perceived because of the way the media portrays those who are the lowest common denominator? Or the lifestyle that is presented by those like Dungy?

I drive a school bus part time, and I can certainly tell you that the "bus driver lifestyle" is not something that I would be proud of if only taken as the perception in the media: Child molestors, low morals, crass, vulgar, etc.

But, in the area where I drive, I'm not the only preacher who is driving to support himself.

What other professions would you condemn a person for being a part of?

Didn't a lot of the people have problems with Matthew(Levi) who was a tax collector? Alot of folks had problems with who Christ was seen with.
