John 5:4 is left out of many newer English versions (or appears only in a footnote). Do you think this verse is original to the text?

I have no reason to doubt it.
Otherwise verse 3 would not make sense. Why would they be waiting for the moving of the water? It appears John included the verse to explain what was going on in verse three.

Maybe that's why someone in centuries past felt the need to add it, to help explain verse 3 for those who didn't know what it referred to.

Why would so many manuscripts NOT have this verse?

It is found in the margin of some of the older documents, evidently added to explain this odd Jewish belief.

Later copyists, fearing that they were leaving something OUT that should have been in the text and had been previously omitted, added it in. Happens all the time in writing still today.

You should see some memos that have added explanations in margin that later end up in the text as if it was in the original. Been there. Done that.
