    WASHINGTON—President Trump has been threatening to close down the government if Congress doesn’t meet his immigration priorities, but he has privately agreed to put off a potential shutdown or any fight over border wall funding until after the midterm elections, an administration official said Monday.

    In recent days Mr. Trump has been warning that he will accept a shutdown when government funding expires on Sept. 30 unless Congress toughens the nation’s immigration laws and comes up with more money for a wall on the Mexican border.

    WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to shut down the federal government unless Democrats in Congress support his immigration initiatives, including money for a wall on the border with Mexico.

    Trump lashed out at an immigration policy that allows up to 50,000 immigrants to receive visas each year and the practice of arresting immigrants for crossing the border illegally and freeing them until their cases are adjudicated.

    "I would be willing to 'shut down' government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall!" Trump tweeted. "Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!"

    So what happened? Why isn't Trump leading on this? Shouldn't he be banging pots and pans together and demanding that Congress vote on Wall funding before the election? Wouldn't that give clarity to voters as to where the candidates stand on this issue?

    Doesn't it make sense to emphasize the most important issue that Americans care about BEFORE THE ELECTION? You have leverage right now.

    Simple. He's not sure he has enough "leverage" to avoid losing the House by acting now.

    Can you elaborate?

    Sounds like he's afraid if he brings up Wall funding he's going to lose the House. If he stays quiet about it, he may save the House majority.

    He knows that a budget showdown now will lead to a government shutdown, and I don't believe he's sure the blame will fall on democrats. After all, for the past few months he's made it clear that HE will shut the government down over immigration, not democrats.

    I really love that my staff and I are going to kill our selves this month to get all fiscal year projects awarded by the end of the fiscal year to support the Navy’s mission. Giving up weekends, staying late, working the 29th and 30th of September until midnight all for the reward of possibly being furloughed a day later on 10/1/18. What gratitude. I just love it.

    I think that you are right that Trump should act now because this was a number one reason for voting for him. People want the wall. China has a wall, the Vatican has a wall, Obama's DC house has a new wall. Did you notice that Pelosi says that she is going to stay in her job until Trump leaves office--that would make it 2024 according to my calculations.

    He's talking about using the military to fund this wall now, he made an agreement with lame duck Ryan and Mitch to back off until the elections were over. They don't want a shutdown because the GOP would be blamed, and rightly so IMO - who has control of Congress and the White House?

    Problem is if the House flips, and they'd probably go back and defund the thing anyways, so why push it? The wall is a popular issue but shutting down the government, even if symbolically, would hurt the GOP.

    That makes no sense. So if someone shows up from Bangladesh in Mexico, and Mexico as usual claims no money, we should not pay Mexico to send them home but allow them in the USA?
