The difference is not in the sin but in the act of repentance. We all know that if we confess our sins, God will forgive us our sins, but if we try to hide our sins, He brings them to light. This principle holds for our politicians as well.

No matter what their moral failures in the past, if they are willing to admit they were wrong and they improve then we should be willing to forgive them. On the other hand, if they try to cover up and hide their sins, if they try to explain or excuse their sins, then I feel no obligation to forgive or forget. They have not repented they have not changed, they will do it again.

If a politician has a dui, I don’t care. If he admits he had a dui, admits he should not have been drinking and driving, paid his fine, and did not do it again, I have no problem. But if they same politican gets pulled over dui and uses his influence to sweep it under the rug. If he trys to hide it. Well then, I have a big problem.

Politician has an affair or sleeps with an intern. OK, if he comes out tells us about it, admits it was wrong, and it does not continue, then I am ok with that. But if he lies about it, if he says he did not do it or tries to justify it in some way, well then I have a problem.

If a politician did drugs, that’s fine with me. IF he comes out, tells us it was wrong, he should not have done it and won’t do it again. But, if he lies about it, or conditions it in some way like, “I did not inhale.” Well then yea, the politician in question is a stinking hypocrite and I have a problem.

Crabtown, McCain has admitted his adultery. In his book he takes full responsibility for his divorce. He could have blamed it on his imprisonment, or on her accident, or an a million other things but he does not. Instead he expresses his remorse at not putting the same effort into his marriage that he put into his career.

Yep, another non-issue. Where were all the liberals coming out of the woodwork when Monica Lewinsky was regularly visiting the WH? Or John Edwards?

Isn't this a double standard since Obama also admitted his business deal with Tony Rezko was "boneheaded"? So if McCain admits to it we forgive and forget but when Obama admits to his mistakes it is still a mistake...

Isn't this a double standard. We learn Obama lived in Indonesia as an 8 year old child and attended a Muslim school and this makes him a radical Muslim but when it comes to McCain we can say with a strait face, "History that has no bearing on the present". Can we all work from the same rule book?

Perhaps not defending but we certainly see post excusing his adultery because it was in the past... In other words, as good Christians should, we can forgive HIM.

What happened to our poll poster? We haven't had consistent polls in a long time. I miss those polls and this question would make a very interesting one.

I think both parties (and all humans) have trouble with double standards! It's the old do what I say and not what I do catch-22. It's the same reason my son wanted to leave his school in the 9th grade because everyone there was a hypocrite - then he found out everyone in the secular world was also a hypocrite. (using the term everyone loosely here ;) ) Before he left that school (he did return the next year), I reminded him that he was also a hypocrite - as was I - at least on some issues. It is impossible as a sinful human to maintain consistency.

I have never believed that Obama is a Muslim just because of his background. I do believe he's a universalist from listening to his own words in an interview with the Chicago Sun Times. So no double standard here.

I agree, good post. Humans only consistency is our inconsistency.

Read all the posts and see how quickly McCain supporters are to defend his 'transgression.' That is tacit approval of adultry ... the defenders would never come right out and say they approved ... but unless they are willing to show the same forgiveness and kindness to those they do not agree with they are establishing a double standard.

If Senator Obama was an adulterer I think that the McCain supporters would be posting differently and accusing Obama supporters of excusing sinful behavior.

But that is not even true. I thought Obama went to a Christian (Catholic) school in Indonesia. I don't really care where he went to school when he was 8. What concerns me is what he thinks about fanatical fundamentalish muslims and the terrorism they create today.

    What Double Standard for Adultery?

Ahem! Did not David do worse? Did not David repent? Did not God have mercy?

Hasn't McCain acknowledged that it was his worst moral failure? Has he tried to cover and lie about it, ala Bill Clinton?

McCain is not David and David was not McCain ... and I have no idea if McCain has repented to God. That is not my point. Would the conservatives be so quick to 'forgive' and defend a liberal accused of adultry who had also confess and ask people to forgive him?

Clinton wasn't too bright in his denial.

Very profound and correct post. It seems we all draw from more than the raw facts when making an opinion which leads to some degree of bias.

As it should. And the answer is Senator Obama opposes both.

Then why isn't he talking about it? Why does he want to take our victory in Iraq and give it back? I have heard him say that he would take forces brought back from Iraq and use them to fight terrorism in other places, but where, when, and how? How would he increase our militaries effectivness? How would he keep Iran and North Korea from going nuclear? What will he do when Russia invades Ukraine? Sorry I just think McCain or Palin will do better with these challenges.

He doesn't, what he said is that to achieve true victory we need the Iraqi people to take civil control of their own country so we can bring our troops home.

Afghanistan... samething bush wants to do except Obama has been saying it for a while

This is just cracking me up. When Bill Clinton had the adulterous affair with Monica Lewinsky, the libs told us it had no bearing on his Presidency and he was a sitting president having the affair, not 30 years in the past. Now, the libs want to make an issue over 30 years ago to defame McCain who admitted he had a moral failing and didn't apologize about it. Not once did he shake his finger into the camera and say "I did not have sex with that woman."

So, puleeeese. This is just another stretch and grasp at straws.

And, as has been pointed out, if you want to go back 30 years, then the Muslim schooling should be fair game, as well. You libs can't have it both ways, even though you try.
