A friend and I were discussing this just yesterday. How many here take a yearly vacation away from home, and not to visit relatives?

A real vacation involves either an RV or a hotel/motel room and lasts longer than 4 days (not just a weekend getaway).

Ours doesn't include a hotel room, that's for sure and an RV doesn't quite describe it either. We go on our sailboat! It's like an RV since it's pretty much a full 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath house, but it's in 42 X 13 feet. We bought the boat 5 years ago (selling our old one) and have used it as our vacations ever since (and used the old boat as our vacations for 11 years before that). We sail from Long Island to Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Newport, RI and such. It's a wonderful time of closeness for the family and it costs us very little because it's a sailboat, so we use about only $200 worth of fuel for the entire boating season and we try to stay on the "hook" (anchor) as much as possible. We bring our own food and only eat out one night with the family because my FIL treats us each year and then DH and I will eat out alone another night as a "date night". We'll only do this when we're at a safe place (a dock or mooring) and the kids will have mac and cheese, chicken nuggets and watch a movie.

I wish we could do "regular" vacations like going to a hotel and such but because our vacation fund is tied up in the cost of keeping the boat, we can't. I'd love to have someone else cook for us and someone else make my bed and do the dishes! Oh well! Maybe someday!

We usually do. We haven't been able to every year, but most years we go to the beach for a week.

Every other year at best. Hopefully we will take more vacations as we get older. The last two or three were taken with my folks... they offered to take us so we went. ;)

My wife and I take a yearly vacation away from everyone, just for the 2 of us.

I think it was Vance Havner who said that Jesus said we should come apart and rest a while or we will just come apart.

    I wish I could!

I have never been on a vacation in my life!

My vacation is when everyone else is gone and I get to stay home by myself and cook, eat, and sleep when I want to. Ahhhh a little piece of Heaven!

One day, maybe we'll have enough $$ to do a real vacation.

I have the time off...but we've never had enough money to do it. The last two summers, we saved all year for a vacation. 2006: $3K in car repairs a month before our trip ate it up. 2007: Wife had surgery, and I don't have state employees insurance (IOW, some of that "good insurance); so it cost us just about the exact total we had saved up.

Maybe we'll get lucky in 2008. Or maybe I'll order one of those Rod Parsley Gin-ew-wine prayer cloths, so I can go on a good trip (and get a new sports car). :D

No complaints, though. Our cars run, and my wife's better. It was a good trade....hopefully, though, we'll be able to take the kiddos to some of those cool locations I've always wanted to take them.

I'm all for one. What time does it start?

And will you come by to feed our dogs and cats while we are gone, please??

Hey, Donna! You are close. You feed mine, and I will feed yours when you go on vacation :)

Thanks! Bye! I'll call and let you know when we get back!! :wavey:

    Ed

P.S. If you don't have any cats, Donna, this ol' farm boy (and my bride) will happily give you a couple of nice ones. (Well, me happily, anyway; not sure about her, here.)

Sorry, I don't have any spare pups to offer, at the moment. :D

    Ain't I/we generous??

Yes, but more like mini-vacations throughout the year.
Maybe a weekend in St. Augustine, 4 days in Atlanta, ect.
We haven't taken a week/10 day vacation since our
    honeymoon......
Maybe we should do something about that.

Every year (almost every year) Mrs SBC and I attend an Evangelism Conference just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC. We do manage an extra day just for us. That's about the only vacation we take.

I do get time off, but with 4 daughters (or at least three who would be able to go) we often just can't afford to take one. We do take a day trip every now and then.

But... When we're "suffering" from the empty nest syndrome, maybe then we can take some real vacations. We'll see.

The kids have been begging to go to the beach ever since they saw it on TV. I think they're finally big enough to enjoy it, so we may go this summer for a couple of days. It's only a few hours away.

    love,

    Sopranette

Vacations indeed. Two vacations every year have been the secret to 28 years of blissful marriage. madre takes her vacation in the spring and I take mine in the fall.

    LOL Padre!

Rbell, if it makes you feel better, T and I were married for 12 years before we had our first vacation that didn't involve visiting his sister.

Even now vacations are hardly a guarenteed event and usually revolve around where he is going for this conference or that, or where he has to go for a consulting job and sometimes we don't go with him then. Depends on the $$$$.

Time off is different. After 21 years he gets time he has to take or he loses it. Wouldn't do to lose a day off!
