Views on the Trinity

    I originally started this thread to find out if any one on the Baptist Board held to any other belief that the Trinity.

    I do not understand all the supposed confusion over how God can be three, yet one. True, it is something that we cannot do, but God is not limited by the confines of human existance. Just because God is revealed as Father, Son, and Spirit does not make Him (singular) into Them (plural).

    God is God. Whether we like it or not, whether we agree with it or not, whether we believe it or not, it makes no difference to the fact that He is the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We will not understand it until we see Him face to face.

    As to having three seperate church services so that we could worship all three, I must ask one question: Why? (Not my original question, but one that I think our good and faithful moderators will be pleased about). To start trying to worship God as three seperate entities would be to stoop into idolatry and polytheism.

    Christianity is monotheistic, but God is triune. Is this a contradiction? Only if you do not believe the Bible to be the innerant Word of God.

    Thanks for your defense of the doctrine. I too find no better expression of the concept than the Athanasian formulation.

    Defining the nature of the Godhead - as much as is humanly possible - was THE main concern of the early church, first in the nature of Christ, then of the Trinity. Although the Athanasian creed appears fairly late, its roots stretch back at least to Tertullian.

    The Trinity, IMO, is among the most poorly taught doctrines of the church. There's really no excuse for that, given the effort that our predecessors have put into trying to explain it.

    Well folks, I'm stupified. Especially by Trotter's statement that the Trinity isn't revealed in the Old Testament. Wow! First, I don't believe that, second, it shows there is much more than meets the eye about an individuals's theology about the subject.

    I often try to play "devil's advocate" but that's difficult to do in an online forum. Nevertheless, I've enjoyed this discussion and appreciate everyone's time in responding. [​IMG]

    As a Muslim, I said I will never be a Christian since their religion has what is called the.......sigh......the Trinity. But when I came to know who Jesus is, it would not matter if it is 3 persons or 3000 persons in the Trinity. The Trinity is the longing of God for humankind: it is that eternal union of the Father and the Son and their relationship which is nothing but pure love. The Lord longs to pour out this love in us. In order to do that, the Father sends the Son in the World as His fully Revealed Word. The Word inerrantly and perfectly reveals the Father and brings about the long-desired reconciliation.

    The Trinity is the joy of God in joining humanity to take part in His divine nature, and without the Trinity this can't ever happen.

    I have enjoyed this thread thoroughly. I enjoy a good arguement, especially when it is over something as worthwhile as this. Although I did not find what I was looking for, I have enjoyed the ride thus far.

    4study: The Trinity was not in full view in the OT, not hidden. It was mentioned in the beginning of Genesis, and refered to throughout the OT, but not as openly as in the NT.

    I agree that the doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most neglected in our churches today. This is to our shame, for it is one of the most fundemental and foundational truths of our faith. Without it, we praise a dead man.

    Praise God for the truths found in His Ward, and praise Him that He gives us the faith to believe and love Him!

    Amen to that last post of yours Trotter.

    I believe God is so much greater than us that we will never fully grasp His Glory. I try to study to "show myself faithful" as much as humanly possible. I just thank God for His wonderful grace and mercy. He alone holds all the answers. To God be the Glory!
