Do you support school vouchers for private schools?

This link came from another thread we were discussing

From the link: The program is currently being challenged in court by a group of teachers "

Why are the teachers so upset - Catholic schools have always been known for excellent education.
In addition Evangelical Christian schools have been very successful.

In fact, home schoolers have won national awards

    For spelling

    For Geography

Now, I think there should be some oversight for home schoolers, to insure the kids are actually learning, but for the most part, we do need to let kids learn to the best of their ability

Various Christian Private School organizations are against vouchers because of the potential government control.

I advocate tax credits and forcing everyone to pay for their education. The tax credits would be enough to pay for a basic public school education or as a downpayment/payment towards a private school and/or homeschool. Since this is a tax credit, government has no control on how the money is spent.

Also, there is a program called the backpack plan. This is sorta like vouchers but with a built in program to allow for educational autonomy. This program works like the G.I. Bill in that it can be used for any education expenses or programs. However, like the G.I. Bill, the schools are autonomous in how they operate.

Have heard that every year the State of Alaska gives all necessary teaching materials to every family living out in the wilderness. Does anyone know how the per capita cost per student pencils out compared to supplying a building and teachers for town kids?

No, why don't you tell us!

PS - this might be off topic, but each year the State of Alaska sends each permanent resident of the State a check!
