Hi Bob,
If you have read a 1611 KJV you will note that there was not a standard during that period of time for English and many letters were pronounced differently.

If you do not have access to a 1611 KJV you can get a copy that will run in E-Sword and compare in directly to many translations. You will even find different Greek text NT's to compare if you wish to go that far.

Also on E-sword you will find the ESV for free. I wish the other publishers would take the same path because ESV has pretty well proven that people only use e-text to compare and write text notes for preaching. They can also do a fast search for a topic they are preaching about, so it is a good pastor's tool; however, they found that if a person read a Bible and became used to it, it wasn't long before most would pick up a hard copy to prevent tedious reading and eye-strain (especially for us older (I'm 53.) and yes your eyes do start going downhill for close up viewing when you hit 40. This has been the first year I have had to carry reading glasses to even visit a bookstore or use a computer at my job.

Most of the real KJV updates were to fix obvious printer and editing errors and these were not much more than correcting the words, spelling and other translational errors.

The NKJV is another story. It is a good Bible, but it is NOT a true KJV as far as the original manuscripts used in 1611, but it also footnotes a lot of those changes.

I have half a dozen or more English Bibles including two parallel Bible's that I use more than my computer and it is interesting to read the same chapter in another translation style because you will often see what the author really means by a side-by-side comparison.

I do NOT mean to take anything away from the Holy Spirit helping us to understand what we do read in the Bible; but, I also believe God gave us a very powerful mechanism called a human brain to understand the Bible and see God in this wonderful creation He provided for us. There are no animals that can bring this kind of information to a conscious level, so therefore, only humans (at this point-in-time) are given this level of conscious awareness.

The 1769 Oxford still had the spelling "Judea" (Matt. 2:1, etc.) instead of Judaea with the same difference in several other words in the New Testament. The spelling "Judea" was still in Oxford KJV's until 1804 and in Cambridge KJV's until 1844 and again in the 1873 and 2005 Cambridge and in some other present KJV's. I may have overlooked it Logos, but are we using the Oxford edition today and is it still without major change since 1769?
I used to get Cambridge and Oxford confused since I didn't pay a lot of attention to either geography or history (boring teachers, believe me) because I enjoy history now and wish I had learned more in school.

We are not using KJV editions today that are every word the same as the 1769 Oxford edition. Most are probably using a KJV edition that was based on the 1769 Oxford. Some Oxford KJV editions today differ from the Oxford KJV edition in the Scofield Reference Bible, having the spellings that Cambridge KJV editions had adopted in the 1900's from the 1611 and having the renderings that are claimed to represent the Cambridge edition. Some may be using a KJV edition printed by Zondervan or Hendrickson that is based on the 1873 Cambridge edition edited by Scrivener instead of on the 1769.

The changes would not likely be considered "major," depending on your definition of major. Some claim that the difference between LORD [Jehovah] and Lord [Adonai] is major, and there are many such differences between the 1769 Oxford edition and most present KJV editions in uses of "Lord" verses "LORD." Perhaps only the KJV editions such as the Companion Bible, the 1984 Visualized Bible of H. L. Wilmington, and the 2003 Evidence Bible of Ray Comfort would have "LORD" as many times as the 1769 Oxford.

In the new 2010 Oxford University Press's history of the KJV entitled Bible The Story of the King James Version 1611-2011, Gordon Campbell incorrectly claimed: "In the Old Testament the only innovation since 1769 has been the change from LORD to 'Lord' in Nehemiah 1:11" (p. 141).

While most of the information posted on the screen during this video about the 1769 Oxford was accurate, at least a couple comments were not.

The 1769 Oxford edition does not actually have the spelling "scull" in every case since it has the spelling "skull" at Matthew 27:33 and perhaps at the other New Testament uses.

The 1769 Oxford edition could be said to have "LORD" where most present KJV editions have "Lord" more than a few times, depending on how you define "few." I counted at least 65 times that I have found in the Old Testament and once at Matthew 16:22 in the N. T. The Companion Bible edition of the KJV that may still be in print would be an exception since it has "LORD" in most of the same places where the 1769 Oxford does and in perhaps a few others.

There are also four times where the 1769 Oxford has "Lord" where most present KJV editions have "LORD" (at Gen. 30:30, twice at Jer. 7:4; and at Acts 2:34).

While it is possible that "LORD" was sometimes introduced into KJV editions as a mistake on the part of the printers, there is evidence that indicates that some editor or printer may have deliberately put "LORD" in many cases. I will post that evidence below. In a few of the 65 places where the 1769 Oxford has "LORD" and most present KJV's do not, the 1611 edition also had it.

The Companion Bible noted: "Out of extreme (but mistaken) reverence for the Ineffable Name 'Jehovah,' the ancient custodians of the Sacred Text substituted in many places 'Adonai'" (p. 31). Appendix 32 of The Companion Bible listed "The 134 Passages where the Sopherim altered 'Jehovah' to 'Adonai'" and noted that these 134 passages were preserved and given in the Massorah. The Massorah is the information contained in the margins of the Masoretic Text. In a few of these passages where Adonai is in the Masoretic Text, present KJV's follow the Massorah with its rendering "LORD" [Jehovah]. The Companion Bible edition of the KJV puts "LORD" instead of "Lord" in all 134 of these passages.

Thanks for your comments on the video of the 1769 Oxford Edition from BibleProtector.com.

Do you have any thoughts on what BibleProtector.com calls the "Pure Cambridge Edition" of the King James Bible? Is this the closest edition we have today of a "standard" King James Bible?

I am getting ready to purchase a new King James Bible. One of the editions I am considering is the Cambridge Large Print Text Black French Morocco KJ83 (ISBN 978-0-521-50881-0). BibleProtector.com says this edition is a Pure Cambridge Edition.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts.

In my opinion, asserting that one edition of the KJV should be called the "Pure Cambridge Edition" based on a test of its renderings at 12 places and implying that other editions of the KJV are impure if they differ at any of these 12 places is misleading and wrong. I have discussed this edition with Bibleprotector, and he would assert that other editions are "impure" if they differ from the one he advocates. A KJV edition could have a more serious variation at many other places and still be classified a "Pure Cambridge Edition" by use of Bibleprotector's test of only 12 places. The present edition that Cambridge University Press prints called its "Standard Text Edition" would have many variations from the claimed "Pure Cambridge Edition." Bibleprotector attacks the highly praised and acclaimed edition of the KJV that was edited by Scrivener for Cambridge in 1873 and that is presently printed in some Zondervan and Hendrickson editions.

So far as I know, the edition could be considered overall as good as most other present KJV editions, but it has not been properly demonstrated that it should be considered the present "standard" KJV edition.
