Well, if we weren't throwing billions of dollars in foreign aid away every year to countries who hate us, there would be plenty of money to fund social security.

    Not to mention:

BTW, the greatest generation are the parents of the baby boomers. The baby boomers are not the ones brokaw was refering to. They came latter.

The amount we spend on foreign aid is a mere drop in the bucket compared to how much we spend on Social Security every year.

Wrong thread for that, Bunyon. Take a deep breath from your dislike for me and think before posting.

KenH, That was an accident. I actually meant to give a second thumbs up on your post that oldregular posted, but we were going on so many threads that I did not realize that that was still copied. I don't dislike you. But I am not sure about some aspects now, that is for sure. Here is what I meant to post.

Well, I guess (shades of Brave New World), you youngsters will just euthanize all of us so we don't strain your wallets. Sorry, most of us have paid in all these years and it IS an entitlement. Either that, or the government can give back to me all I've paid in since the 1960's (with interest) and I'll make my own way. Thank you very much.

The Constitution grants no authority to the federal government to administrate a Social Security system. They need to phase out the entire Social Security program, while continuing to meet the obligations already incurred under the system. Until the current Social Security system can be responsibly phased out, they need to make sure that the Social Security tax not be a "rainy day" fund which politicians can pirate, or from which they can borrow to cover their errors and pay for their excesses. Individuals who have contributed to Social Security should be allowed to withdraw those funds and transfer them into an IRA or similar investments under the control of the individual contributor. Any sort of merger between the U.S. Social Security System and that of any foreign country should be banned, so the distribution of benefits will not go to persons who have not qualified for payments under American law as legal residents. Earning limitations on persons aged 62 and over should be removed, so that they may earn any amount of additional income without placing their benefits at risk. Those provisions of the Social Security system which penalize those born during the "notch years" between 1917 and 1926 should be repealed, and those persons should be placed on the same benefit schedules as all other beneficiaries. Anyone not recieving benifits should be able to choose between private retirement and pension programs, either at their place of employment or independently.

Well, I would not go that far Lady Eagle, but the system is broken and we are all going to have to lower our expectations. But I do understand how you feel. But if you are over 50, I don't think you have to worry. It is we who are less than 50 who will get nothing in spite of all we contribute.

"A large part of the problem with Social Security, is our government is giving it away. Someone can come to our country and claim political asylum.
They get full social security benefits, which we have to work 35 +/- years to earn it."

You are probably referring to SSI, not SS.
