It will sound so superior and high-minded, but I really do believe in the concept of no creed but the Bible. I have not read every baptist creed (I know most baptists would prefer the term confession, but when it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and talks like a duck..it's a duck)and for the most part I don't have a problem with any of them. The very reason some(perhaps most) have never heard of them and the fact that by in large baptist churches have not adopted them I think proves the the point that most baptist churches actually live by no creed but the bible.

Gotta go with the later London as well. As a reformed baptist it fits well with every area of theology (although it does NOT delineate every part of doctrine as I would like to see it).

The 1689 is the Baptist Confession I adhere to best. Every baptist should read it and study it.

Of course, that is really what a confession is - just a summary doctrinal statement of Bible verses.

As contrasted to a creed which tends toward interpretation of the Bible and fidelity to its creedal statement as opposed to the Bible.

Baptists have always been a people of doctrinal statements known as "confessions", not "creeds".

It must be my poor eyesight  , but I can't see any difference between a confession and a creed. [IMG]

To me it appears that a confession is just as interpretive as a creed.

The Baptist Faith and Message, for instance.

A confession represents what it generally believed.

A creed is a prescribed set of beliefs that must be ascribed to.

Is it semantics? Maybe. But semantics matter; in this case, especially among Baptists.

Well then, the BF&M is a creed.

The word Creed means "I believe" just like a confession. Both are statements of faith, nothing more.

I agree with rsr that semantics matter, but this is a matter of semantics nonetheless. Baptists have tended to stay away from the word "creed," and have preferred nomenclature such as "articles of faith," "confession," and/or "doctrinal statement." But, as Kiffin notes, creed comes from "credo," which simply means "I believe." The problem is not in the terminology, but in how much a church, association or convention may choose to elevate these confessions/creeds/statements. So it doesn't matter what you call it - it's how you use it!

As one who works through automonous churches at best, and loose association-fellowships at worst, the confession/creed business (such as that over the BF & M) is almost a non-issue to me. I wouldn't be terribly disturbed if the churches I work with have the Midlands, 1644 London, 1689 London, Philadelphia, New Hampshire or something they've developed for themselves. Since we are/would be acquainted personally with the churches with which we are/would be working, we would be aware of the positions and practice of those churches.
