Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. Did you read the scriptures concerning this? He made sabbath for the man, not man for the Sabbath. When the jews participate in the Sabbath, this is in direct disobediance and rejection of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came for man, just as God made the sabbath for the man. The sabbath was meant to symbolize the rest of God from creation. Jesus Christ is the second Adam. WE are new creatures in Christ in THE NEW ADAM. Jesus Christ is the beginning and the ending, the first and the last. He is the rest, or the seventh day of creation. It is partially fulfilled spiritually for the saved NOW, and will be completely fulfilled at the resurrection. Nowhere are we commanded to obey the sabbath day. This was representative of Jesus Christ who fulfilled/will fulfill this. Israel was commanded to forever keep this day. She is now not doing this, by rejection of Jesus Christ who is our rest, and our Sabbath now in part, and fully to come.

love in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,

But, Michelle, what has all of that have to do with the subject of this thread?

"What biblical basis is there for Sunday observance?"

I understand most of your position...not all, in that some of what you are ranting is not found in the scriptures. But what has all of that got to do with Sunday?

Wopik is trying to find something...anything...to back up his aberrent beliefs. Instead of attampting to show something of substance regarding the subject, or refuting the author's abnormal theology, you are going off on a tangent. Focus!

    In Christ,
    Trotter

I don't think Jesus, the founder of Christianity, thinks that Sabbath observance is an "aberrent belief". Afterall, it was Jesus' custom (Lk 4:16). I'm sure Jesus kept all the Ten Commandments, not just the fourth. Of course He had to -- since He was living a righteous life and wanted to abstain from sin. Something we are all admonished to do (1 Cor. 15:34).

Jesus was the Rock that followed the Israelites in the wilderness.

Jesus, the LORD, saved the Israelites out of Egypt (Jude 5) --- Jesus, therefore wrote the Ten Commandments with His very finger.

Jesus was a Jew, last time I checked. To fulfill all righteousness, He kept Torah.

I'm not a Jew, I'm a Christian. The "first day of the week" when the disciples met and when the church met for special offering for the poor, the "Lord's Day" as it was called by the early church, the day we call SUNDAY, is very distinct from Judaism.

Hello, all. And have a great Thanksgivng. Let us all thank the Lord our God for our full bellies and the help He has given us throughout our lives.

God's Sabbath command of Exodus 20:8, "Remember the Sabbath . . . to keep it holy" represents an example of God definitely tutoring His special people in the obedience of a universal law, rather than His singling out one nation for obedience to an exclusive law not meant for the rest of mankind.

The admonition, "Remember," itself indicates that this commandment is not instituting the Sabbath for the first time, but rather enjoining Israel to keep and retain what is already in existence.

It does not say He originated or instituted the Sabbath with them—it says He made it known to them. Israel had lost knowledge of it at that time, as Gentiles have today. But God revealed the Sabbath to Israel, who was to become His covenant nation. God did not create the Sabbath at Sinai, but rather made it fully known at that time.

The gentile Church's universal acceptance of the first day of the week as their sabbath originates from the authoritative, apostolic tradition or "pattern of teaching to which they were delivered" (Rom. 6:17).

Christ was resurrected on the first day of the week.

The Church began at Pentecost on that day and will end on that day.

The "Lord's Supper" was celebrated on that day.

Corporate worship was conducted on that day.

Contributions were given on that day.

Notice the pattern established by the Apostles for having the first day of the week dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ. I think its in our best interest to continue what was originally established by the Apostles.

I was to late to edit so add this to clarify that the Apostles refered to were not the original 12 chosen by Christ, but those mentioned as apostles in Acts after the formation of the Church.

    Hi prophecynut,

There is no biblical evidence of this!
Sunday observance comes from Mithraism, as does Jesus' birth date - December 25.

There is no biblical basis, or biblical ban, on observance on any day of the week. We do so voluntarily, and out of communal custom. Nothing unscriptural about our current traditional methods of worship whatsoever.

    Hi Johnv

Luke and Paul (circa 50-75 CE) still don't refer to "the first day of the week" as any thing other than "the first day of the week".

    IMO, that's quite telling.

    In Your Opinion?

Since when did your opinion become scripture or a mandate for proper practice?

Decades after the resurrection, Paul and Luke still refer to "the first day of the week" as nothing more than just "the first day of the week".

The Sabbath, in fact, shall be observed following the return of Christ, when the fullness of the New Covenant shall spread over all the earth (Is. 66:23).

The Lord's annual Sabbaths, in fact, shall be observed following the return of Christ, when the fullness of the New Covenant shall spread over all the earth (Zechariah 14:16-19).

    Wopik,

I am not mad at you. But I don't follow you, either, nor do I want to.

I do not bow to the Law. Jesus Christ is my Lord, not the statutes handed down to Moses.

Does that mean that I commit murder, or adultery? No, because Jesus said that they were sin. But I have yet to find any place that Jesus told us to observe the Sabbath. Know of one, wopik?

If you follow the Law, then surely you have stoned women to death for having children out of wedlock? And the fathers of these children? Surely you have stoned disobedient children in the city gates? Surely you carry a spade to dig a hole to go to the bathroom in, and to cover it up? These are in the Law as well, wopik.

    In Christ,
    Trotter
