Currently I am in what I call a "church transition" period. For several reasons, which I laid out on the prayer board, I have sought out and found a new church. That got me to thinking. What do you look for when you, for whatever reason, go through your own "church transition" period?

What I have looked for is as follows (in order of importance "1" being most important)...

    1. Bible believing/teaching (both Sunday school and preaching).

    2. Evangelical (i.e...believe in evangelism/missions)

    3. A church that is growing spiritually.

    4. A friendly congregation (but not overly friendly).

    5. A church that is easy to "get involved" with (ie...there is not an elite social club type environment). Sort of goes with 4.

    6. The church is stable.

Those are some things that I have looked for. What about you?

Those are fine, Martin, but what about Theology? I will try to find out where they are on the theological spectrum. Because you might believe one thing and they another, esp. in the area of soteriology. Then you find yourself not preaching the way you would like about a passage, esp. if you are committed to expository preaching.

Besides, there is always room for growth in different ministries. But theology on crucial matters is important. That is what I would do.

I look for a living creature, not one trapped in it's tradition.

I'd agree to make sure the church isn't trapped...I would (of course) say make sure it isn't a cold, dead church.

Also I'd toss in that the church:
    a. Speaks the language of the culture they exist within
    b. Exists with a missional mindset
    c. (and I can't understate this enough) Does what they do with excellence

Just some other suggestions since you've hit the good ones already. Oh, and stay away from anything with "Memorial" or "Landmark" in the name ;)
