    This is John Stead in his chapter "Developing a Biblical View of Church and State" in "Thinking Biblically" bu John MacArthur, et al. (p290)

    I am most interested in your thoughts on the bolded section.

    It directly contradicts David Barton and the modern day theocrats. I think the "stake in the heart" bit is inflamatory, implying that State Religion is a blood-sucker by nature - I'm not convinced that is apt but I'm not sure it isn't.

    However, freedom to worship as one pleases (within government-set limits) is one of the hallmarks of the American experiment.

    You might have guessed, but I think it's a ridiculous statement. Unless the author of that statement wants to better clarify his metaphor, there is no way that the religion clauses "killed" Christianity. Yes, it did kill a national, established church but that doesn't equate to killing Christendom.

    I agree with the statement somewhat, but it was not the intent of the constitution to reject a sacral society. It was the intend to reject a sacral government. Society is guaranteed that the government will guarantee an individual's right to worship as he pleases, so long as he does not require governmental respect for his worship, and so long as his worhship does not malign any other constitutional guarantees afforded a person.

    I don't think I totally agree with the "stake" comment, but I do agree with the general sense of the quote.
