A food processor is only a more modest more fragile blender with various cutting edge connections. You can manage without if have a sharp blade and figure out how to cut up. A blender holds more and some can change cutting edges like the Ninja. I rather utilize a blender since it permits me to make soups by making purees speedier.

Though I've yet to make hummus in it, the Vitamix is by far the best blender I've ever had. Here's a recipe for hummus from their site:

    Ingredients
    • 2 cans (900 g) chickpeas, liquid reserved from 1 can
    • ¼ cup (35 g) sesame seeds
    • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
    • ¼ cup (60 ml) fresh lemon juice
    • 1 garlic clove
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • ½ teaspoon salt, optional
    Directions
    1. Place chick peas, reserved liquid, sesame seeds, olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic, and cumin into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid.
    2. Start the blender on its lowest speed, then quickly increase to its highest speed. Blend 1 minute, using the tamper to press ingredients toward the blades. Season to taste with salt if desired.
