On another thread (ordaining elders) BM from Arkansas asked a pertinent question. Just what IS an elder.

I am not an ordained pastor, but here are two trains of thought I have encountered in recent years:

1)The same Greek word is translated "bishop", "elder", and "pastor"

2)The "elders" of a church are men who are set apart to "rule" the church in a form of a representative democracy(a "congregational" church, by contrast, would be a direct democracy). The "senior pastor" or "pastor-teacher" may or may not be a ruling elder, depending on the individual church.
