    What to wear off base?
Often a GI will be off base for a variety of reasons. If he does, should it be acceptable to wear a work uniform (ACU's ect) or should only a dress uniform be authorized.

    Open for discussion.

I was reading on a military page where a USMC GI was on he way home for the day. He was in his ACU's. He had a flat tire.
but needed additional assistance (no cell phone) so he waked a ways to a nearby store to call.
An NCO saw him in his utilites - and it ended up this GI was given UCMJ for wearing his work uniform off post.

From my POV, the wearing of cammies\BDU\ACUs off post took hold fifteen years ago or so. I think it came from the Army and Marines saying we are at war so we will look like warriors whenever we can.

I agree now Squire - but were you in during the Vietnam Conflict?

We were considered lower than whale dung.

Although I did have a lot more success hitchhiking in uniform until I got to my hometown - Boston - lucky to make it onto the subway with out at least an insult, dirty looks.

I just missed the draft by a year or so. I turned 18 in '71 and I got a high number that year. I enlisted in the USCG in 1973.

It was still nasty for the wearing of the uniform.

Not too bad in flyover land but you could get pounded in the big cities.

Hank, we CG recruits wore our dress blues on our end of boot liberty in San Francisco without problems. In 1973, the Coast Guard West Coast Recruit Training Center was located on Government Island in the Alameda Channel. At night was could see the BART trains going through Oakland.
