The sbc churches that are in the founders movement seem more interested in the bible...the others seem to like tradition, and a nominal kind of belief like many Rc do. there are some exceptions...but having visit several..it is like the difference between a Bob Ross painting..or a paint by the numbers watercolor....One is live and spontaneous...the other has all the outward things....but seems more interested in the external form.

There is not even a SBC church within a 50 mile radius of here. But I have been approached by them to start a church. The requirement is 6 families. I asked if they could show me where 6 families are required in scripture. Thats when I had to make a decision if I wanted to ally myself to them, but truthfully I could not make that kinda commitment. They already moved off the scriptural reservation & are into the SBC way of doing things. Dont like that.

I have this guy right by me who started a Baptist Church then took it to Non Denominational land (principally because they want to attract Roman Catholics) ....come to think of it, thats why Baptist churches have left the landscape around here....that Non Denom movement became quite strong in the '90's It's my contention that if your a baptist, then stick to it & don't morph into something unrecognizable for the sake of adding head count....be proud of your Baptist roots. Crap like that would also cause me to leave.

Finally, alter calls always PMO. What a show. You walk to the alter while I will walk out the door. Life is to short than to have to endure that type of theatrics.

Making a creed a litmus test like the SBC.

    Becoming hierarchical.

Dwelling on women's responsibilities while ignoring Paul's admonitions to men on how they are to treat women.

    Confusing politics with Christianity.

    Confusing culture with Christianity.

    Preaching Calvin more than Christ.

I am sure there is more.

The opening assumes that all Baptist groups teach the same.

Yes if they put the same lackadaisical attitude into their spelling and grammar you do.

Sadly you don't see the difference between honest errors and not trying at all.

Speaking from the layperson's perspective, at least in my area, SBC Churches and Evangelical Churches in general are eaten up with this issue. We have aligned ourselves with a political party as the lesser of two evils and we squint really hard to make that party look Christian and righteous. Certainly some grass roots organizations are trying to influence the GOP to become more “Christian” with very little effect. I have joked with some friends that if their Baptist church ever learned they voted Democrat that their Church would likely deny them communion. It is very nearly becoming a test of fellowship especially in small groups and Sunday school settings. I happen to vote Republican but I am under no illusion that they are the righteous party.

We have used/misused the Church as the protector of cultural norms for centuries. In some ways this is improving. I am convinced a memo went out to SBC preachers letting them know that their congregants can read; thus, some preachers are easing up on proclaiming the sinfulness of a glass of table wine with a meal. :p
