When should Independence day be?

    We celebrate Independence day on 4 July- becasue of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. However, the first armed conflict occurred at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Couldn't that as well have been considered our day of Independence?

    Many of the Founders (and, yes, I know I'm using Founders and Framers interchangeably but I'm just speaking colloquially) believed it should be on July 2, as that's when the Lee Resolution was ratified and which many of them actually considered a more important document than the Declaration of Independence.

    I visited the newly opened Museum of the Revolutionary War in Philadelphia last week.
    The formal surrender of the British occurred October 19, 1781 after the battle of Yorktown.

    You could also make a case for Sept. 3, 1783 (Treaty of Paris).

    I believe that the day our recognized leaders officially declared that we were independent, via signing of an official document, that was the official independence day....July 4, 1776.

    It's been July 4 for a couple of hundred years.

    I don't see a problem with it staying that way.
