    John Newton, Olney Hymns

    When sinners utter boasting words,
    And glory in their shame;
    The Lord, well-pleased, an ear affords
    To those who fear his name.

    2. They often meet to seek his face,
    And what they do, or say,
    Is noted in his book of grace
    Against another day.

    3. For they, by faith, a day descry,
    And joyfully expect,
    When he, descending from the sky,
    His jewels will collect.

    4. Unnoticed now, because unknown,
    A poor and suff'ring few;
    He comes to claim them for his own,
    And bring them forth to view.

    5. With transport then their Saviour's care
    And favour they shall prove;
    As tender parents guard and spare
    The children of their love.

    6. Assembled worlds will then discern
    The saints alone are blest;
    When wrath shall like an oven burn,
    And vengeance strike the rest.

    He wrote some great songs. We use this one in our more contemporary service:
    Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
    Let us love and sing and wonder
    Let us praise the Savior
    s name

    He has hushed the law
    s loud thunder
    He has quenched Mount Sinai
    s flame

    He has washed us with His blood
    3x
    He has brought us nigh to God

    Let us love the Lord who bought us
    Pitied us when enemies
    Called us by his grace and taught us
    Gave us ears and gave us eyes

    He has washed us with His blood
    3x
    He presents our souls to God

    Let us sing though fierce temptation
    Threatens hard to bear us down
    For the Lord, our strong salvation
    Holds in view the conqueror
    s crown

    He, who washed us with His blood
    3x
    Soon will bring us home to God

    Let us praise and join the chorus
    Of the saints enthroned on high
    Here, they trusted Him before us
    Now their praises fill the sky

    You have washed us with Your blood
    3x
    You are worthy, Lamb of God

    Tom it is so much more full of doctrine, encouragement and hope in the original version:

    Let us love and sing and wonder,
    Let us praise the Savior’s Name!
    He has hushed the law’s loud thunder,
    He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame.
    He has washed us with His blood,
    He has brought us nigh to God.

    Let us love the Lord Who bought us,
    Pitied us when enemies,
    Called us by His grace, and taught us,
    Gave us ears and gave us eyes:
    He has washed us with His blood,
    He presents our souls to God.

    Let us sing, though fierce temptation
    Threaten hard to bear us down!
    For the Lord, our strong Salvation,
    Holds in view the conqueror’s crown:
    He Who washed us with His blood
    Soon will bring us home to God.

    Let us wonder; grace and justice
    Join and point to mercy’s store;
    When through grace in Christ our trust is,
    Justice smiles and asks no more:
    He Who washed us with His blood
    Has secured our way to God.

    Let us praise, and join the chorus
    Of the saints enthroned on high;
    Here they trusted Him before us,
    Now their praises fill the sky:
    “Thou hast washed us with Your blood;
    Thou art worthy, Lamb of God!”

    Hark! the Name of Jesus, sounded
    Loud, from golden harps above!
    Lord, we blush, and are confounded,
    Faint our praises, cold our love!
    Wash our souls and songs with blood,
    For by Thee we come to God.
    by John Newton

    I really wish the modern folks wouldn't mess with the true message of the Hymns these great men wrote - just to make them ear tickling. If they want to "update the music" that isn't near as troubling to me than stating a phrase, repeating it over and over just to heighten the emotionalism which ultimately disregards the truth.
