Though I agree with Spurgeon & Edwards, I'm not sure I would choose them for my church today.

Our church is Trinitarian, so TD Jakes is not an option.

I would leave if somehow Kenneth Copeland ever got in the door. He is scary.

Don't know much about the others except for Lucado & Warren. Though I really like Lucado's books, he is still CoC.

    That leaves Warren.

Thanks that someone said this!

Rachel, could you re-do the poll and leave off Jakes and Copeland? I would prefer to consider the poll without heretics Jakes and Copeland (Jakes denies the Trinity; Copeland says God has a body and other heresies).

Of course, I don't know if I could vote on styles since I don't really know the styles of most of these people. Still, it makes me cringe to see Jakes and Copeland listed with Christians.

He's a heretic and embraces a "gospel" that is popularly known as "Word of Faith". The Word of Faith teaching comes directly from the New Thought movement and has many things in common with Christian(sic) Science and Unity, among others. Kenneth Hagin blatantly plagarized the writings of E.W. Kenyon, who was a disciple of P.P. Quimby (just as Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian(sic) Science was).

Wikipedia has an brief but accurate article on Kenneth Copeland that you should investigate.

    Here are some telling quotes:

He does not preach the gospel of Jesus as revealed to us in the New Testament, although he is very religious and uses the name of Jesus a lot.

If he is a Christian (that is, one who puts into practice the teachings and actions of Jesus), he is extraordinarily resistant to the message of Jesus. Since his message does not even closely resemble the message of Jesus, I personally have to conclude he is not a Christian, but rather, a false prophet.

And on a personal note, Copeland's headquarters is located here in Fort Worth. I have known several people who have worked for his "ministry", and the stories are not very good.

I know Marcia. :) I put them in on purpose though. So many people don't know what they teach and say all kinds of great things about them. I was curious if any BB member would pick them.

If Spurgeon smoked cigars (or anything else), I wouldn't want him either as a pastor. I like the one I have just fine.

    Spurgeon's my choice

I chose Spurgeon simply because he's the closest to what I believe although I prefer the pastor I have now at my church.

Interesting things about Copeland...reads like a Mormon to me - nothing Christian about his beliefs!!!!!

Honestly I would put McLaren on that same list, IMO the man isn't even saved and inundates his writings with post modern and new age thought.

None of the above. I'm happy with my pastor. He doesn't pound the pulpit, but that's okay. :)

I would have to pick Bobby Daniel to pastor the church i'm at, because that is me and me is the pastor!
But since me is not on the list, i choose Adrien Rogers.

If his points are strong enough, his pounding doesn't have to be ;)

Just a question from the peanut gallery...

Should the fact that a few of these pastors are deceased factor in to the decision?

come to think of it...a deceased Adrian Rogers would probably be a better pastor than a living Kenneth Copeland...

I am 100% against ANY smoking. I thank God it's a habit I never had. It is a filthy and totally unnecessary habit that serves absolutely NO useful purpose. How can a Christian tell someone how God frees them from burdens while He's blowing smoke at them? The only thing I can even think of that even comes close to comparing with the foul, putrid stench of tobacco is a skunk. My apologies to skunks for the comparison.

I'm pleased that you don't have a strong opinion about the matter... :tongue3:
