A question for mods, admins or people who know how vBulletin works.

In the Currently Active Users section at the bottom of the main page, there always seems to be 50-100 guests at any one time, even at hours when only people on my side of the world should be awake.

Are these guests tracked by IP or are they simple hits because I can't see that many people lurking here at all hours of the day without actually registering. Or are they all bots?

They are kind of like visitors at church. They never join. They never become active. They just want to watch.

    And they are watching!

    That's a lot of watchers!

I'm on other forums that may have 10 to 20 guests at a time.

Another forum I frequent normally has a few hundred guests. But they also have a few hundred active users. That makes sense to me.

It does not make sense to me that a forum has around 100 guests and only 10-20 active users on a consistent basis.

People don't like to commit on the important things? ;)

The other forums I'm on are education or sales related and people go there generally because they need information or help, so I think since they have a pressing (seen) need, they post.

I've mentioned before that our posts here pop up in searches. This (the number of guests) is again a reminder that we don't know who is watching how we interact (and just how we act)!

That could explain some of it but it still perplexes me.

    Agreed.

John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

A google search is how I found BB 5 yrs ago... So it could be results from searches...

plus, it could be members that have signed out and just reading before logging in to post....

Or it could be banned people that like to keep coming back to read.. I know some do because I have had to block their messages (on facebook and other places) because they read something on here, and didn't like it so they tried to message me... (Actually more like harassing me... oops I hope they don't see this.. .oh well) So I know banned members read the forums...

Then I have some friends that have told me they like to read, but are too chicken to jump in the discussions.... Some discussions do get intense here.

Besides BB is becoming a popular place.

I wasn't thinking that searched posts bring in guests - although they certainly could. I was, however, thinking that they represent us warts and all. It would be wonderful to be seen as Christ-like!

A lot of times, I dont logon because I am just reading and not posting.

I assume that when I do this that it shows me as a guest also.

It does. I stay logged in here, BUT I've got other boards in which I don't and I appear as a guest before I log in to post.
