I am in my school's band and I would like to know how many people on here are in the band. Also do you enjoy marching season or concert season better?? Do you enjoy watching the football game or hanging with friends??

We have over 200 kids in 6-12 grades. The High School band this year started out at about 60, but we have dropped to about 47 due to bad attitudes and kids with a lackof committment. We go to marching and Concert Contest. We made a first division at one marching contest this year, and a second at another. At Concert Contest, we made straight ones and a one in sight reading. Overall, it has been a good year.

I am in Band I play the trumpet, I love concert band, Then I can play chorales and harmonize with the other players. And also I get to use my vibrato!!!!! Sorry it's a trumpet player thing. I tolerate marching band, one good thing though is getting to play with a louder sound, In the band room we are always told to back off.

I play clarinet and bass clarinet. This year we had seven clarinets in marching season we were so happy when our band director had to tell us to back off. Last year the trumpets drowned us out. I tolerate concert season. Marching season to me is what it is all about. I played bass clarinet for concert and I can not wait till I go back to my clarinet!!!!

Do you know what your show is next year?

I used to be in the band, but I dont play anymore due to a surgery that I had. I had a jaw surgery that left my bottom lip numb so it makes it really hard to play flute. Im thinking about switching to violin or maybe upright bass, but im not sure yet thats alot of $$$

I'm not in a band, but I married a band director.
She plays most instruments. I can play most brass instruments with valves. I never could get the trombone. Played all the percussion toys at one time or another. I still have my flugel, trumpet, flute and triangle. [IMG]

Well I can play most insturments that are brass, Woodwinds are instruments, just accompment to the good ones which as brass and strings, the only good Woodwind instrument is the sax because it is made of brass mostly. Oh yeah and percussion is ok.

    ckm49er,

Violin is a great choice! I say that when you're picking an instrument or say you have kids and want them to learn to play, you should let them pick the instrument that they really want to learn. It makes it a lot easier and a lot more fun. Do you have anyone there that plays? And did you mean the upright bass as in classical or bluegrass? If you meant bluegrass then it would be a LOT easier to learn than violin.
You must live in a small town? I'm surprised all of TX's music shops don't deal in strings. lol You might wanna try Southwest Strings, it's kinda far away though(AZ) but you can check it out if you want. www.swstrings.com Also you might want to try putting an add in the paper for an intermediate used violin. Or if you have a local radio station you could try that. We have one and you can call in and advertise, say you're looking for something, ect. If you do advertise, I would make sure that you had them play it for you. Listen to the sound of the violin, not the person. My mom buys beginner violins off of ebay and sells them using the radio station. I always play for whoever is interested and they usually end up buying. I play fiddle and usually will play a waltz then a rag or hoedown and since they don't know anything about it, they watch the fast fingers and think that it's the best violin they could possibly buy. It'd be better if you knew someone that played and they could try it out for you. I probably wouldn't try ebay b/c it'll probably say "intermediate" and actually be beginner's.
Good luck and let me know what happens, it's always good to hear someone else is interested in learning to play the best instrument in the world! :D

    In His love,
    Alicia

I think with out a doubt that clarinets are the best! I find that trumpets have very big egos (not all I am sure but the ones I know do) Percussion is just plain annoying! LOL Do they ever stop beating???

Correct on that music girl: All trumpet players have large egos about trumpet playing. I myself adore trumpet playing, some reasons why I believe the trumpet is better than the clarinet or in general any woodwind (except sax):

    1. Trumpet is the only high brass instrument.

    2. Have you ever seen a just woodwind marching ensemble? (Drum and Bugle Corp. is what I am refering to.)

    3. Can you play vibrato on your clarinet?

    4. Who has the melody most of the time and who has the counter melody?

    5. Do you guys get mutes?? (trumpets have the most variety of mutes.)

    6. Which insturment has been around longer??

    7. Which instrument is mentioned in the Bible?

    8. Which instrument is more beautiful in apperence? (oh sorry you might think the clarinet is beautiful, hopefully not.)

    9. Spit, how does that taste anyways?

    10. It is the most played instrument in the world other than the piano and the guitar.

ckm49er, that's good, she'll probably be able to help you. How much did she pay for hers? I paid 250 for my first one and it was an intermediate violin. If you want to hear my teacher and a friend of mine go to www.brmvideo.com It's not a very good recording though. And I don't know who their guitar player was but...

she said that she payed about 3500 dollars. But im not looking to pay that much, I just want a good sounding instrument that has a nice tone and i wont need to replace when i get good at it.
