    Amen!

We eat all the time because overeating is the one sin that is "acceptable" within the church. When I used to smoke I was looked down upon by some members, but now that I am just overweight, I don't seem to bother anyone.

It's hard to stick to a diet when people offer you fattening foods at every fellowship. The preacher who baptized me really suffered with that problem. Every time he visited some of the elderly ladies of our church they would offer him pie or cookies or whatever they had baked that day. He was trying to diet at the time, but how do you do that and not offend the person that believes food=fellowship?

But at least we don't get together and share "drinks". But truly, is one better then the other? Sure, not everyone who attends a potluck is a glutton, but can't bringing a chocolate cake to a fellowship also cause a brother to stumble?

Our church doesn't have many pot lucks any more. Praise God. We either have our cook cook the meal, or we have smaller groups bringing pot luck. People you really know. And hope that are better in hygiene.

The ironic thing is that gluttony is called a sin in the Bible, but smoking isn't. They didn't have smoking back then. Whether it would have been condemned if it had been around is something else, but it's not for us to speculate, and not having any condemnation of it in the Bible, it's not for us to criticize people who do it, except perhaps on health and nothing else.

(Who was it who came up with the idea of setting something on fire and sticking it in his mouth, anyway? That boy wasn't right.)

I'm overweight myself, and there are people who would sooner criticize me for drinking than for eating too much.

People in our church love to get together and fellowship. With food, they have the opportunity to fellowship longer. We live in a small town and it is sort of cliquish (if that's a word), so many in the church really enjoy getting to talk to other Christian friends.

I agree... we do like to eat! In our church any way! We are getting ready for our annual conference this month... And I am always amazed at the "spread" for each dinner! It's totally amazing and ALL GOOD! The best cooking I ever had in my life!!! Wish you all could come! If you are in Michigan (near Flint), come on! I'd love to have ya! April 15-17th You can hear some good preaching from many guest pastors, including many from the south!... And don't forget to stay for the FOOD! [IMG]
