My earliest memories are the SBC church we attended having the Lord's Supper in the evenings and that is all the service was a short message on what we were doing and why then the deacons and Pastor serving and Mom slapping my hand because I hadn't been saved yet and she explained to us why we weren't to partake. Quiet service no talking no music and a prayer before partaking of each part. Then they would come through and collect the small glass cups in the tray's a prayer and maybe a song and dismissed. When we changed to the Independnet church the pastor would preach about 30 minutes during the evening service and then the deacons would serve the Lord's Supper again prayer before taking each part a song and home. Until the early 90's every church I attended conducted it during the evening service and as a time to Honor Christ.

That's good for your church. I guess if I visited that I would be one of "certain" people.

I have been one of certain people in the past, I was the music director at the time of the church but not a member. My family and I were asked to leave actually all none members were told to leave so they conduct the Lord's Table that morning. That was late 80's and the first time I had ever seen it done. Hard time explainig to my son who was 11 at the time what was happening he had been saved since he was 7 and didn't understand why he couldn't partake of it.

Made the wife and I feel like we weren't a part of the Family of God and actually felt like we didn't belong at that church. God changed circumstances later and we moved on from there. That church was a plant and never grew it finally folded the doors.

Yes, you would be, along with any other person that isn't a member of our church.

It's really not hard to explain to a child, or anyone for that matter. All you have to say is that the church believes that only members of the local congregation should partake. If your son can't understand that, you've got other problems.

Well since he has a learning disability and participates in special olympics it is a little harder to explain to him. But since you don't have these other problems you wouldn't understand it.

Well, I would assume that you explain things to him such as "don't steal things in the grocery store", "don't take thing from other people's houses", "don't hit other people", "don't take money out of the offering plate", etc. This is just one more simple thing to teach him.

The point that I was trying to make is that just because you believe that it may be difficult to explain to your child isn't a valid argument for or against closed communion. Do you have a hard time explaining to your child that only the preacher should be the one preaching and that he should remain silent? If it is difficult, should we just stop preaching and let your son preach?

That was not what I was saying at all I just said it was hard to explain to him where he would understand.
The point was you alienate believers when you do that but that is your choice and those who believe as you do will join your church those you alient or offend won't.
This thread is getting side tracked with this if you want to continue may I asked you to start a new thread on this. Thank you.

Its kind of sad that a discussion of the remembrance of the Lord's Table can cause such dissension :-(

Sorry I didn't mean any discension or even sound like I had any decension I was trying to make a point on how it feels to be one of those excluded. I definitely didn't mean to side track this thread I am sure we can right it.

I'll just repost my original, since you failed to read it.

Yes, yours is certainly closed to "certain people". You just stated that it is limited to "Christians only" and that you "give the qualifications". That means you are limiting it to "certain people".

Just because your "certain people" and my "certain people" differ doesn't give you a reason to act superior and talk about people's attitudes.

Didn't we have a thread on Open vs. Closed Communion not long ago? I thought we did, but I can't find it. Since matt wade and sag38 were involved in the discussion, maybe one of them will start a new thread. And maybe revmwc will explain why he was not a member of the church he served as music director.

The pastor called the school I was attending looking for a student help visit, lead music and over all work with him. The church was about 35 miles from my home and Wednesday night was dedicated to my home church. My children were involvced with the other church and I wopuld go there on Saturdays and help the pastor go visiting the wife and kids would stay and visit the pastors wife or we would leave the kids with my mother in law and the wife and pastors wife would go visiting. Then back on Sunday to lead music, sometimes a Sunday night service but normally there wouldn't be. So there was no reason to join the church while just helping the pastor.

You shouldnt have to explain an extra-biblical non loving, non fellowship requirement of man. You did the right thing in getting out of there.

When I was growing up the Sunday night service was called "The Evangelistic Service". From what I have read - and I may be wrong, it's happened often - the Sunday morning service was aimed at believers. The Sunday night service was more evangelistic. That may be why the Lord's Supper was served on Sunday morning. And it has remained that way even though if an unbeliever is going to come to church now, they would probably come on Sunday morning.

I'm glad Jesus makes it easier to come to him than to take communion in these closed minded churches... Us 4 and no more.. should be their motto!

Tim, the fact is that closed-communion churches would have an easier time of it if they were open. They wouldn't have to endure the kind of attack you just unleashed.

Closed-communion churches base their view on what they believe the scripture teaches. They believe the closed view is biblical truth. That being the case, they have no wiggle room. So, I guess that does make them closed-minded, in a way.

I give you credit for basing your differing view of communion on scripture. I suspect it is a strongly-held view which you are not likely to change. Would it be fair to say that you are closed-minded on the subject?

This is a subject on which believers may disagree. In fact, I would prefer that my own church would limit access to the Lord's Table more than it does. But we don't engage in name-calling over it.

Oops, I have helped derail this thread. Sorry. Disregard this post.
