I see a character issue at stake where parents lead their children into believing in mythical characters, and I know more than one Christian who suffered a crisis of faith as a child when they learned that Santa wasn't real.

Well, in our house, dh does NOT take the headship role when it comes to shopping...he hates it...so yes, I am Santa Claus.

My children, as far as I know, never developed any complexes from believing in Santa. I know I didn't.

I felt lied to, I will admit it. But then I got older and could maybe see why parents did it.

My wife and I don't have children that have had Christmas with us yet. We will revisit this issue when we have kids to have Christmas presents with. Until then, this is kind of a non-issue for us.

    HUMMMPH!!
This reminds me of a song i made up a couple yrs ago...
I posted this on a thread a couple weeks ago, but here it is again...

Sing after me... (to the tune of It's beginning to look alot like Christmas)

"I'm beginning to look a lot like Santa,
    everywhere I look,
As I look in the mirror there..
    I'm beginning not to care,
About the last peice of pie I took...."

I'm beginning to look a lot like Santa,
    Grey is in my hair...
But the scarriest site you'll see
is when you look at me...
    In my easy chair!!!

Anything that distracts from the real reason for the holiday is idolatrous. Teaching children that santa is real has nothing to do with imagination. Imagination comes into play when we pretend what is is real is not. Children are not pretending that are living as if it is real because that is what they are being told. This goes beyond imagination. It is now a lie.

I don't like that either. I know all liars will go to hell.

I'd rather my children believe in Jesus and not in fairy tales, like Santa Claus. He's just a character for cartoons.

Children need to be taught the true reasons for the holidays.

Kids do not need us to teach them to lie, they know how to sin all one their own, we should not give them excuses as to why it isn't their fault if they sin. If they learn to lie from us, then sin isn't their fault it's ours, poor little angels(NOT) are innocent of sin, and will always be able to blame someone else for it.

I said pretty much the same thing. It comes naturally. Having said that, I still didn't tell them a fairy story about Santa Claus. I told them the truth about the REAL St. Nicholas. I don't know if it would have damaged them to do otherwise. That's just the way I am.

Here is a double reason to call santa evil. Not only is he santa, he dances.

That they were a means for the Catholic church to placate the pagans it wished to absorb?

In my own case, my faith in Christ was indeed challenged when I finally had to face the fact that "my parents were Santa Claus." I had tried very hard to have faith in Santa, despite all the evidence. Afterward, it was hard to believe Christ was any different.

Thanks to the OP for the interesting correlations between Santa and Jesus.

We lie to our kids often in other ways as well:

"You can be whatever you want to be." You will be what God gives you the resources to be. Resources may be talent, connections, ambition, energy, time, education, His grace, or many other things.

"There are no such things as monsters." If a demon isn't a monster, what is?

"There is nothing to be afraid of." There is plenty to be afraid of, especially if you do not place your hope and trust in Jesus Christ.

"What you don't know can't hurt you." What you don't know can kill you and send you to hell.

"It's the thought that counts." Every day people do awful things for reasons that seem right at the time. Obedience to God is a better policy than good intentions.

"Truth is always the best policy." Sometimes silence is the best policy.

I am just wondering how many here that are lying to your kids that the 25th of December is Jesus' birthday?

One lie is as bad as another...

FWIW, I told my kids early on that December 25th probably wasn't Jesus' birthday.

I guess you have to have children for that. ;)

So, when do you think Jesus was born?

I know exactly when Jesus was born. He was born on His birthday.
