Why do you do what you do when it comes to what type of work you do or what hobby you pursue?

The question comes from my daughter, who popped up and said "Why do you write now instead of doing art?"

Well, there are some practical reasons, but she knows art had been a big part of who I am. And it just so happened that an hour before she asked, I'd been laying on my bed scrawling out some ideas for a poem, and distracted myself on the same page by starting a drawing underneath the writing. So I told her "pick up my notebook and look at that page."

She did and we both busted up laughing.

Some things you just do because you have to.

For me, writing is a must and something I'm good at. It's both a stress and a release.

Art is another story. I have to have it around or go looking, but I'm not that great at it. However, it goes beyond being part of who I am and quickly goes to addiction. I've only met one other person like that in my life. (and his paintings go for a good amount!)

Those are my two things. Being deprived of literature and art would be something I would not deal well with. A combination library and art gallery is my idea of heaven on earth!

How about you? Do you HAVE to do what you do for work/hobbies? How would you feel if you could not do those things?

The work I did until I retired was a last resort. I couldn't find anything else, and I wasn't qualified to do anything. I hated my job and couldn't stand most of the people, but I stuck with it because there was nowhere else to go. Now I'm doing what I love--NOTHING!

As for hobbies, I have none--unless you count spending hours every day in Christian Web sites and hours in bed tossing and turning because of the pain and trying to sleep.

Why do I do what I do - good question.

For my employment, I do what I do because there was a need and I could fill it. I do the media at church (the PowerPoints and other things that go on the screen on Sunday mornings, manage the website and that sort of thing) and then I do the "Welcome Center" on Wednesday nights which is where people can go for info and such.

As for my hobby, it's horses. I've been a horse lover all my life and my mom tells me my first word was "horse". :) I just find a lot of joy, satisfaction and pleasure in working with them, even doing what I did today was picking poop. LOL I did all the work for my friend who owns the horses since she's away so it was cleaning stalls, carrying water, fixing food, throwing hay, cleaning paddocks then taking some fun pictures and video. LOL I'll post a link in a few minutes of me getting mauled by a horse. But I'd be completely sad if I couldn't be around the horses.

I do what I do (resident counselor at a children's home) because underneath, as much as I don't admit it, I like drama.

For 20 years I was in the military. I did it, because it was all I knew. (My dad was in for 30yrs) It only really got good towards the end when I met Gayla
After retiring I went from job to job and that was and still is to feed my family and nothing else...Being a widower, I wish I could find something from home...something steady....:type: :BangHead:

Saggy, do you attend the live stage performances? I love them, and have seen Phantom of the Opera every time is was performed in Toronto, and even went to London to see the first performance.

The first stage performance I went to see in NYC was a drama in itself. The stage workers went on strike. Tyrone Guthrie came on stage and announced the play would go on with the performers sitting on steel chairs on stage. Tickets would be refunded to anyone who wished it. We all stayed, took in the performance and no one asked for a refund.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Why do I do what I do??

#1 I love to preach-----just love it---You know, I hear stories of men who say that they were called to preach but that for a long time they ran from the calling------well---I ran TO the calling and then I ran WITH the calling---No one had to CHASE me to get me to preach---I surrendered to the call

After 21 years of full time preaching---I felt convicted by the Lord Jesus to enter bivocational career---and I now have my own successful landscape LLC and a dynamic church to pastor. Again---I didn't run AWAY from God's call to quit full time ministry---I ran WITH God to the place He wants me.

But I love to do both--------Love to preach and pastor---and love to do landscape

I enjoy my job (administrative assistant) becuase there is little stress involved. That doesn't mean I can't handle stress. I actually work well under pressure. Sometimes I'm at my best when the pressure is on.

Working mall security is a stressful job. That's where most of my experience has come from. You have to be customer friendly, know how to effectively diffuse situations, file reports in a timely manner, stay alert, know what / know what not to say to people. There is more that goes into the job than most people think. Its not just "tail 'em, nail 'em, & jail 'em".

As for hobbies, I don't have the traditional hobbies. I spend most of my off time playing video games, watching tv, & watching movies.

Playing video games lately has become a hobby because I collect more games than I play. I own a Playstation 2 (PS2) & have over 120 games for it. There are at least 20 games I have had for over a year & haven't even played yet. I beginning to wonder if I am growing board of playing them. One of my co-workers is telling me I should upgrade to an X-Box 360 or Playstation 3 (PS3). I don't know if I want to or not. Maybe I'm just getting old or starting to grow up.

As for watching movies, my favorite types are comedy, action, & horror. To break that down even further, my favorite type of comedy are parodies of other films. My favorite types of action films involve cops, vigilantes, or war. I hope people don't think less of me for saying this, my favorite types of horror movies are slasher flicks & zombie movies (the slow moving kind). I own well over 400 dvds. Everytime I buy a new one, its a challenge to figure out where I am going to put it. I have plenty of dvd racks, its just figuring out the placement.

When it comes to watching TV, I only have a few shows that I really care to see. I do watch wrestling every Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday (WWE Monday Night Raw, ECW, & TNA Impact). If boxing comes on HBO on Saturday nights, I might watch that (it depends on whose in it). I also like watching O'Reilly Factor & Hannity on Fox News Channel. I find those shows very informative. If I'm watching TV at any other time, I will generally watch forensic or crime shows on Discovery Channel, A&E, or Tru TV. Some of my favorite shows are Forensic Files, The New Detectives, The FBI Files, The First 48, & America's Most Wanted.

Aside from that there ain't much to me.
