I think we do, but OK. [IMG]

Yes. Both. From his perspective, he's there "right now" as they are being written via his inspiration. There was never a "time" where God thought "Hmmmm, in 100 years I'm going to inspire John to write some scripture", for God already existed where John was writing scripture.

Okay, then....something we agree on.

Oooh....we're on a roll. God decided to do it and caused it to happen via inspiration.

So what was the mechanism God used to accomplish this inspiration? Did it ensure that they would actually be written? Did it ensure that the final product (and we're talking orig mans here) would be as God intended it to be?

From our perspective, yes. But those are time-dependent phrases you are using. ;)

His will - *in conjuction* with the men's conscious, real, independent choices to write things down.

Sure, but not through coercion, but because God worked *with and through* the real choices of the writers. They turned out the way God "intended them to be" (another time-related phrase) because before and while they were being written, God also existed at the point in time where they were already finished.

It's also interesting to note what is contained in the OT:

history -- we still write down history today. Court historians/scribes were expected to do just that!

Poetry -- often praise, which we still do today.

Prophecy -- Not being a prophet myself, I can only imagine what it would be like to be personally directed by God in that way and then refuse to write it down!

In other words, it is not as though the OT contained things men were not aware of, except in a few specific instances, which are lovely for us to have because they do indicate the veracity of these books being real. The major exception, of course, is Genesis 1-5, and Genesis 1 in particular. However, given the evidence that Genesis is actually a series of eyewitness accounts and that since God wrote the Ten Commandments HIMSELF on stone in Exodus, I do not find it farfetched to assume that He wrote down Genesis 1:1-2:4a for men as well. Personally. Himself.

And I suppose you have some that aren't? [IMG]

I would mostly agree, although I would not use the word independent, as I believe we are told the scriiptures were written through the agency of the Spirit. "Men of old spoke as they were moved by God"--not independent choices, but real and conscious ones.

I agree.

I would say this too, but I'm not sure we mean the same thing by it, because then you say:

Are you saying that the cause of the scriptures turning out as God intended is only the fact that God already knew the finished product, and not because He was also actively working within the men who wrote them while they were being written?

Interesting idea. Personally, I believe he intimated it somehow to someone along the line (Adam?), where it then passed down by oral means until someone (probably Moses) wrote it down. But of course I can prove none of that, nor does it matter too much. [IMG]

And I suppose you have some that aren't?
</font>
[IMG] All I mean is that it appears to me you are only looking at this from the time-dependent persepective, and trying to get me to do the same, when my whole point is that using only the time-dependent persepective doesn't provide satisfactory solutions to the issue.

No, I am saying that us time-limited beings trying to understand timelessness is difficult and complicated, and fully understanding it is impossible. [IMG] It is sort of like beings in a 2-dimensional universe (only width and length, like a flat piece of paper) trying to understand "height". But to answer your question, no - I also agree that he "was" actively working within the men while they wrote (and from his perspective, "is" ;) )

Perhaps you can get to the point? ;)

Absolutely. And now I know enough about what you believe to get to the point.

You say that scripture came about by:

and because

and this was all

And I might even take it farther than that. I think each decision the writer's made about word choice, subject matter, etc, was concious and real as well. They were not puppets, nor were they taking dictation. But that might be neither here nor there to my point, which I am finally getting to.

So would you agree then that God can will something, actively work within men to bring about that willed outcome, and yet that does not necessarily negate the conscious, real (I'll leave out independent cuz I don't know how you are defining it.) choices of men?

And neither, really, does trying to free ourselves from the bounds of time, cuz we just can't do it. We are, by nature, created beings, and we cannot escape creation. Even when God reveals things to us, he has to use phrases like, "before the foundation of the world." We can imagine what it might be like to be the Existant One, but we are only ever going to get the tiniest glimpse, and even that tiny glimpse is liable to be at least slightly off.

So, we accept that the satisfactory solution to the issue exists, but we can't get at it. It remains a mystery to us, but not to God. The solution is rational, because God is rational, but that doesn't mean we are going be able to explain it, or even hold the solution for a microsecond in out finite minds.

Absolutely. God *can*. But I don't believe he *always* does this. In fact, I think it's pretty rare, the inspiration of scripture being one example, maybe the hardening of Pharoah's heart being another. However, men can choose to do the will of God, knowingly or unknowingly, just as they can choose to do something that is not the will of God. It is the will of God that we abstain from fornication. Yet sometimes Christians fornicate. It is the will of God that all come to salvation, some choose to accept salvation, others choose not to. It is possible for man to choose to do something that is in opposition to God's will. Ultimately, at the heart of Calvinism (as I understand it), that is impossible - and I cannot accept that.

Then why this comment?

which suggests that you think that God arranging things so that belief is ensured means NECESSARILY that the choice to belief isn't a real one--means that the person HAS NO ALTERNATIVE but to believe.

If it is possible in the inspiration of scriptures, is it not POSSIBLE (not talking whether it is so, just whether it is possible) in the salvation of men?

But I don't believe he *always* does this. In fact, I think it's pretty rare, .....

Can you tell me, scripturally, why you believe this?

It depends on what you mean by will. Is it impossible for man to choose to do something that goes against the way God is working out the course of history? No.

It is possible for a man to go against the commands of God for human behaviour? Absolutely!

Now, I really MUST do other things for a while, so I may not respond again immediately..or I may, depending on how self-controlled I turn out to be. (Did you see that I posted on your favorite "timeless" subject while you were posting your last post to me? What is your feedback on that?)

</font>
No, I was explaining how I understand Calvinism, not what I believe personally. I do not believe that belief is foreordained in that manner.

Yes, it's possible. We could all be robots, yes, that is not impossible.

I already did. It is God's will that we don't fornicate (1 Thess 4:3). Yet some Christians commit fornication. That is just one example. I also mentioned that God wills all to come to salvation (Matt 18:14, 1 Tim 2:4), yet obviously some choose to accept salvation while others don't.

It depends on what you mean by will. Is it impossible for man to choose to do something that goes against the way God is working out the course of history? No.
</font>
It depends what I mean by will?

YES it IS possible for man to choose to do something that goes against God's will because God is NOT "working out the course of history" - again you're seeing it only from a time-dependent view. God is not "working out the course of history" - he is above history, at all points in history. He knows our choices because he's at their realization, not because he's "working out the course of history" so that we have no alternative but to make that choice. That's my whole point.

I agree - yet where I disagree is that I see the cause of someone going against the commands of God is because of that person's *choice* - a real choice - not a manipulated illusion, the result of God working out the course of history so there is no alternative for that person.

I agree, in fact my position rests on this fact! Since we are limited to time, and God is not, and God is infinite and omniscient and we are not, then it is conceivable (nay, most probable) that God knows of a way to be omniscient and know the future while still giving us a *real* "free will" to choose things without being manipulated into it. I believe the answer lies in the fact that God is not bound by time, while we must go through it.

God bless,
Brian

Helen:

If God predestined you to salvation, then what can you do about it in terms of belief?

I can believe, as I have been commanded.

Can you cancel His decision by not believing?

My belief is also part of God's plan.

Your attempt to combine the necessity of belief denies the very sort of omnipotence and sovereignty that Calvinists claim for God.

Not so. Calvinists affirm that "very sort of omnipotence and sovereignty" and human responsibility.

I know this is where they are aiming. My point is that belief then really has nothing to do with the matter.

In that case, you are on the wrong forum. Your argument is not against Calvinism, but a figment of your own imagination.

So if humans do not exhibit that responsiblity, they are not saved regardless of predestination?

God's elect will believe, because of predestination.

This was just emailed to us. I thought this thread might be an appropriate one to put it in. I haven't cleaned it up, so please excuse that:

==========

&gt; &gt;DONUTS
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;There was a boy by the name of Steve who was attending
school in Utah.
&gt; &gt;Brother Christianson taught at this particular school. He
had an
&gt; &gt;open-door policy and would take in any student that had been
thrown out
&gt; &gt;of another class as long as they would abide by his rules.
Steve had
&gt; &gt;been kicked out of his sixth period and no other teacher
wanted him, so
&gt; &gt;he went into Brother Christianson's class. Steve was told
that he could
&gt; &gt;not be late, so he arrived just seconds before the bell rang
and he
&gt; &gt;would sit in the very back of the room. He would also be the
first to
&gt; &gt;leave after the class was over. One day, Brother
Christianson asked
&gt; &gt;Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him. After
class, Bro.
&gt; &gt;Christianson pulled Steve aside and said, "You think
you're pretty
&gt; &gt;tough, don't you?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve's answer was, "Yeah, I do."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Then Brother Christianson asked, "How many push-ups can
you do?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve said, "I do about 200 every night."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"200? That's pretty good, Steve," Brother
Christianson said. "Do you
&gt; &gt;think you could do 300?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve replied, "I don't know... I've never done 300 at
a time."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"Do you think you could?" Again asked Brother
Christianson.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"Well, I can try," said Steve.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I need you to do 300 in
sets of ten for
&gt; &gt;this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me you can
do it,"
&gt; &gt;Brother Christianson said.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve said, "Well... I think I can... yeah, I can do
it."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Brother Christianson said, "Good! I need you to do this
on Friday."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the
front of the
&gt; &gt;room. When class started, Brother Christianson pulled out a
big box of
&gt; &gt;donuts. Now these weren't the normal kinds of donuts, they
were the
&gt; &gt;extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting
swirls. Everyone
&gt; &gt;was pretty excited-it was Friday, the last class of the day,
and they
&gt; &gt;were going to get an early start on the weekend.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson went to the first girl in the first row
and asked,
&gt; &gt;"Cynthia, do you want a donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Cynthia said, "Yes."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson then turned to Steve and asked,
"Steve, would you do
&gt; &gt;ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve said, "Sure," and jumped down from his desk
to do a quick ten..
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Then Steve again sat in his desk. Bro. Christianson put a
donut on
&gt; &gt;Cynthia's desk. Bro. Christianson then went to Joe, the next
person, and
&gt; &gt;asked, "Joe do you want a donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Joe said, "Yes."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson asked, "Steve would you do ten
push-ups so Joe can
&gt; &gt;have a donut?" Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut.
And so it went,
&gt; &gt;down the first aisle, Steve did ten pushups for every person
before they
&gt; &gt;got their donut. And down the second aisle, till Bro.
Christianson came
&gt; &gt;to Scott. Scott was captain of the football team and center
of the
&gt; &gt;basketball team. He was very popular and never lacking for
female
&gt; &gt;companionship. When Bro. Christianson asked, "Scott do
you want a
&gt; &gt;donut?" Scott's reply was, "Well, can I do my own
pushups?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson said, "No, Steve has to do them."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Then Scott said, "Well, I don't want one then."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson then turned to Steve and asked
"Steve, would you do
&gt; &gt;ten pushups so Scott can have a donut he doesn't want?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve started to do ten pushups. Scott said, "HEY! I
said I didn't want
&gt; &gt;one!"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson said, "Look, this is my classroom, my
class, my desks,
&gt; &gt;and my donuts. Just leave it on the desk if you don't want
it." And he
&gt; &gt;put a donut on Scott's desk.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He
just stayed
&gt; &gt;on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to
be getting
&gt; &gt;up and down. You could start to see a little perspiration
coming out
&gt; &gt;around his brow. Bro. Christianson started down the third
row. Now the
&gt; &gt;students were beginning to get a little angry.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson asked Jenny, "Jenny, do you want a
donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Jenny said, "No."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Then Bro. Christianson asked Steve, "Steve, would you
do ten pushups so
&gt; &gt;Jenny can have a donut that she doesn't want?" Steve
did ten, Jenny got
&gt; &gt;a donut.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;By now, the students were beginning to say "No"
and there were all these
&gt; &gt;uneaten donuts on the desks. Steve was also having to really
put forth a
&gt; &gt;lot of effort to get these pushups done for each donut.
There began to
&gt; &gt;be a small pool of sweat on the floor beneath his face, his
arms and
&gt; &gt;brow were beginning to get red because of the physical
effort involved.
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson asked Robert to watch Steve to make sure
he did ten
&gt; &gt;pushups in a set because he couldn't bear to watch all of
Steve's work
&gt; &gt;for all of those uneaten donuts. So Robert began to watch
Steve closely.
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson started down the fourth row.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;During his class, however, some students had wandered in and
sat along
&gt; &gt;the heaters along the sides of the room. When Bro.
Christianson realized
&gt; &gt;this; he did a quick count and saw 34 students in the room.
He started
&gt; &gt;to worry if Steve would be able to make it.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson went on to the next person and the next
and the next.
&gt; &gt;Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough
time. He was
&gt; &gt;taking a lot more time to complete each set.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve asked Bro. Christianson, "Do I have to make my
nose touch on each
&gt; &gt;one?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson thought for a moment, "Well, they're
your pushups..
&gt; &gt;You can do them any way that you want." And Bro.
Christianson went on.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;A few moments later, Jason came to the room and was about to
come in
&gt; &gt;when all the students yelled, "NO! Don't come in! Stay
out!"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Jason didn't know what was going on. Steve picked up his
head and said,
&gt; &gt;"No, let him come."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson said, "You realize that if Jason
comes in you will
&gt; &gt;have to do ten pushups for him."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Steve said, "Yes, let him come in."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson said, "Okay, I'll let you get Jason's
out of the way
&gt; &gt;right now. Jason, do you want a donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"Yes."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;"Steve, will you do ten pushups so that Jason can have
a donut?" Steve
&gt; &gt;did ten pushups very slowly and with great effort. Jason,
bewildered,
&gt; &gt;was handed a donut and sat down.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson finished the fourth row, then started on
those seated
&gt; &gt;on the heaters. Steve's arms were now shaking with each
pushup in a
&gt; &gt;struggle to lift himself against the force of gravity. Sweat
was
&gt; &gt;dropping off of his face and, by this time, there was not a
dry eye in
&gt; &gt;the room.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;The very last two girls in the room were cheerleaders and
very popular.
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson went to Linda, the second to last, and
asked, "Linda,
&gt; &gt;do you want a doughnut? Linda said, very sadly, "No,
thank you."
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson asked Steve, "Steve, would you do ten
pushups so that
&gt; &gt;Linda can have a donut she doesn't want?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow pushups
for Linda..
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Then Bro. Christianson turned to the last girl, Susan.
"Susan, do you
&gt; &gt;want a donut?" Susan, with tears flowing down her face,
asked, "Bro.
&gt; &gt;Christianson, can I help him?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Bro. Christianson, with tears of his own, said, "No, he
has to do it
&gt; &gt;alone, Steve, would you do ten pushups so Susan can have a
donut?"
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;As Steve very slowly finished his last pushup, with the
understanding
&gt; &gt;that he had accomplished all that was required of him,
having done 350
&gt; &gt;pushups, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the
floor.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;Brother Christianson turned to the room and said.

&gt; &gt;"And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, plead to
the Father,
&gt; &gt;"Into thy hands I commend my spirit." With the
understanding that He had
&gt; &gt;done everything that was required of Him, he collapsed on
the cross and
&gt; &gt;died. And like some of those in this room, many of us leave
the gift on

Was one group smarter than the other? Why did some have faith and some did not? Where does this faith to believe come from? If it takes faith to believe that Christ died for our sins and will take an individual to heaven when he dies how can one dead in trespasses and sins have the faith it takes to come to Christ unless that faith is given to a person as a free gift?

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
