"I am truly sorry you are so busy. You would have been perfect to teach church history."
    "
You flatter me, but my knowledge of American baptist history is rather limited.
At the university where I studied churchhistory (and this was typical for most Dutch universities that offered that study back then) you could either focus on Protestantism (actually the history of the Dutch Reformed church and the history of related churches abroad all covered in excruciating detail), or Catholicism (covering both the history of High Church denominations worldwide and an in depth treatment of the history of the RCC in the Netherlands).
I picked Catholicism as my focus because it had the same sort of instinctive appeal to me that any 6 year old child feels when (s)he hears words like dinosaur or knight.

Sorry for the distraction, will be praying for your project.

    "Chairman of the Steering Committee"

    POB,

This is follow up to some questions that you posed to me.

    First,
I am more of an idea person that a pragmatic church admin type. I can do the work but would rather not. I would rather teach Bible, Theology, Church History, Homiletics, et al.

    Second,
I believe that the sites that have been recommended are places that would be a great help to those who would want to study with us.

    Third,
I think that you may need to "appoint" or "draft" one, two, three, etc. whatever and whoever you would want to help you. This way you can delegate a person to do a job and you could expect an answer. The one chosen could either accept or turn down the post. Then the ones who have the time could "stay on task." They could do the job assigned and then get back to you in a timely manner. I SEE THIS AS THE NEXT CRITICAL STEP FOR YOU AND THE FURTHERANCE OF THE PROJECT!!!

    Fourth,
It seems to me that the first critical task of the Steering Committee (after chosen) is to choose WHAT WE WANT TO BE and WHOM WE WANT TO REACH. An example might be that we want to focus on those who have NO college education at all. Or, we might want to focus on those who have a year or two and want to finish a program of Biblical or Pastoral Studies.

This will allow us (you and the Steering Committee) to get the professors, mentors, admin people, courses, etc. lined up in the respecetive areas. On the "ground floor" of this type of enterprise it is nealy impossible "to be all things to all people." Can we do Institute level education side-by-side with Grad School education?

It seems to be far too difficult to offer a program(s) covering the spectrum for people who have no High School, to people who have College work, and grad work, and beyond. To Me.

If the Steering Committee were to tackle this question, IMHO this would help clear up many other discussions and set our context and agenda more concretely.

    Fifth,
I can teach Public Address or Homiletics online but it will be a stretch. The critic/professor must needs to be in the audience or classroom to measure the "audience participation" and/ or "feedback" and "immediacy" of the sermon.

    Food for thought!

    sdg!

    Dear Rhetorician,
Speaking of steering comittees, could I get you to get UZThD and Exscentric to work together and come up with a statement of faith.
As a no brainer on the Academic side we need to include the following for openers:
    O.T. Survey
    N.T. Survery
    Bible Doctrine
    Theology
    Homiletics
    Hermeneutics
    Apologetics
Manners and Customs of Bible Times
    Survey of Christian History
    The Life of Christ
    The Pentatuech
    The Pauline Epistles
This would cover the first two years of academic instruction.

    Practical Instruction:

    Personal Evangelism
    Missions & Missionary Work
    Church Planting
Church Music,How to lead the congregational singing and How to train a Chiormaster.
    Church Administration and Management

There is a general idea of what I think the first two years should look like.Of course this is all subject to discussion and agreement.I am interested in input from all interested parties.

I would agree to help write a statement of faith. As I don't know what might be involved with being a member of the steering committee, I cannot at this time express a willingness to do that.

    UZThD,

Do we actually need to write one? Or, can we be pragmatic and adopt one that might already be out there? I have some ideas along those lines if you want to hear them?

Could you send me an email directly to my home email address:

    [email protected]

As for the Steering Committee responsibilities, I am sure each one of us reserves the right to draw back if time or personal circumstances do not permit. This is, afterall, and all volunteer army. None of us are drafted.

I completely understand and would want to have the same option down the road.

Thanks for your help as always.

    UZThD,

I see the Steering Committee as:

    1. A help to the "chair;"

    2. Being involved in some "hands on" details from time to time;

    3. Advise and consent;

    4. Conjuring up others to help share the load as we go along.

There is a "learning curve" that none of us knows but is yet to take on.

As soon as I have something to put on a website, I will gladly do it. In fact, I have a couple of things thrown together just to see how it looks. I will work over the weekend with any material I am given and get an "outline" site posted for you all to review next week.

"The Master Christian Library" you mention sounds like a truly excellent resource.
Just make sure that the students fully realize the purpose for which each individual book in the collection was written and the context in which each book was written.

    POB,

Ex. said he DID NOT want to help with the Statement of Faith. But, indicated he might want to help later.

HZThD and I have begun to talk about the SOF and have begun work.

My guess is that Ex. will not want to serve on the Steering Committee either.

But, I will let him speak for himself and not put words in his mouth.

HZThD or I will get back to you when we have something. If you want to "volunteer" someone else to help it will be OK. But, I believe he and I can probably handle the job.

Let me know when you get more on the web page and an address and all. This thing seems to really be taking off.

    I remain fraternally yours.

My suggestion for a belief statement.

I apologize to Rhet if this is out of order. As one might imagine, some existing creeds represent the results of struggles of denominations or associations to define themselves, consequently, at times, these are too precise, I suppose, for our use. So, here is one, I just wrote, which is more general.

    We believe:

    1. The 66 Books of the Bible in their wording in the originals are inspired and inerrant and are the final authority over belief and practice.

    2. There is only one GOD, who eternally exists in three Persons , Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which Persons are perfectly equal in nature, attributes, power, and glory. God is creator of man and the universe.

    3. Man is born a sinner, thus in need of salvation, because of the transgression of Adam, and consequently man is unable except by grace to choose and love God

    4. God the Father loves man so greatly that He gave His only Son to save man by the Son's vicarious death, and the salvific merits of this death are applied only to those who believe and accept Christ as Lord and Savior.

    5. God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who , by His virginal conception is now both true man and true God , existing in one Person, with no blending of the attributes of His two natures, died a redeeming, substitutionary death for our sin , was bodily resurrected and ascended , now intercedes for us as our High Priest, and He will personally and physically return to earth.

    6. God the the Holy Spirit applies to individuals, who only are saved by grace through faith, the salvation merited by the redeeming death of Jesus Christ.

    7. This salvation attained by faith, not works, includes forgiveness of sins, a new nature and giftedness ,empowered by the Holy Spirit, to love and serve God, being at physical death in the presence of God Himself instead of in a literal place of eternal punishment , and receiving a resurrected and glorified body at the time of Christ's second coming.

    8. The Church is the body of Christ and members of local churches should be baptised in water by immersion , not to save, but because this is commanded and exemplified by the apostolic churches, and Christians also should regularly participate in the Lord's Supper as a memory of His death and next coming. The local church has offices as elders (pastors, bishops) and deacons. The church exists to worship God, edify the saints, and reach the lost.

    9. Christians are to consistently grow in grace through prayer, worship, service, witnessing, learning, and fellowship, and total surrender to God.

    10. We recognize that indivuals connected with our Academy may hold beliefs more comprehensive and more particularized than are these.
