Dr. Bob, I've actually heard preachers come pretty near to saying what you just wrote! One missionary that was being supported by a church here said he wanted to teach the tribe in Africa English so they could learn how to read the KJV. They had a perfectly good translation already in their own native language, but because it was associated with Catholicism, they wanted the KJV. It makes no sense...no sense at all.

It could also be the NIV, the NASB or the NKJV or the Holman Bible. They all are the Word of God, pure and readily usable.

These chapters have no basis in proving that the KJV is the only translation in English that is the Word of God. It might be helpful to pick up a book on interpreting the Word of God from your local Christian bookstore. It might help you understand the principles of interpretation better. Just a suggestion.

AVL - it seems "spiritual" to quote a bunch of totally unrelated Scripture to support a non-biblical teaching. We have asked (and asked and asked) for a single verse to discuss that supports the KJV as the ONLY translation but have gotten nothing.

There is a good thread going on John 16-17 and how wonderful the passage is and how it has NOTHING to do with the KJVonly movement. Jump on over.

You are shining the light on them, they really don't like it.

    (John 3:20 YLT)
    for every one who is doing wicked things hateth the light, and doth not come unto the light, that his works may not be detected;

So do KJVOs believe that Germans, the French, the Chinese, the Russians, etc. have to learn English so they can read the KJV to get God's word? Seems rather exclusive and contradictory of God, especially as He chose Hebrew for the OT and Greek for the NT.

    --------------------------------------------------

And HOW IS IT that you KNOW God did this:

"He chose Hebrew for the OT and Greek for the NT".

Did a little birdie come and tell you this, and whisper this in your ear? IF God so chose ONLY the Hebrew and the Greek, how then is it that we have God's word of truth in our own language today? How is it then, that you can determine that God CHOSE NOT TO USE ENGLISH to spread the gospel?

    --------------------------------------------------
Do you KJVOs believe that God does not reveal His word to non-English people unless they read the KJV?
    --------------------------------------------------

Hint: Take of the label of KJV, and look at what is within the pages from Gen.1-Rev.22:21. There you will find the word of God in the English language.

Of course God reveals his word to all who will come, as it is indicated in the scriptures he does:

    Matt. 24:14

    Matt. 26:13

    Mark 16:15

    John 1:29

    John 3:16-21

    John 4:41-42

    John 6:31-58

    John 8:12

    John 12:46-50

    John 14:22-24

    John 16:7-15

    John 17:5-21

    John 18:37

    Acts 17:22-31

    Romans 10:13-21

    Romans 16:25-27

    1 Cor.2:5-16

    Ephesians 2:11-22

    Ephesians 3:8-12

How is it that you God's word, is God's word? Does a little birdie come and tell you? Or is it rather the conviction upon your heart? These verses of scripture (along with many, many more) are VERY RELEVANT to this issue. It might help you to understand what is revealed in the SCRIPTURES by the Holy Spirit of God, rather than focusing on a book by some man about the "principles of interpretation".

We have it in English today because it was translated by humans. I am starting to think that you don't know what a translation is. Here's the definition:

    trans·la·tion (trns-lshn, trnz-)
    n.

1.The act or process of translating, especially from one language into another.
    2.The state of being translated.
3.A translated version of a text.

KJVonly = racism and elitism of the worse kind

Let's get busy and make sure our missionaries are teaching how to read Jacobean English so that the heathen might truly be saved.
    --------------------------------------------------

And THIS IS A LIE and a false witness BASED UPON YOUR OPINION, NOT FACT, nor TRUTH. Shame on you.

You hide the truth because you won't give up your scholary wisdom and attack those who threaten it.
    --------------------------------------------------

What is indicated ABOVE in Dr. Bob's quote is OFF TOPIC and SLANDEROUS UNFOUNDED OPINION.

SCRIPTURE is NEVER OFF TOPIC for christians! So here it is again:

    Matthew 23

    1. Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
    2. Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
    3. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
    4. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
    5. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
    6. And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
    7. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
    8. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
    9. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
    10. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
    11. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
    12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
    13. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
    14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

    15. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
    16. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
    17. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
    18. And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
    19. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
    20. Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
    21. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
    22. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
    23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
    24. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
    25. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
    26. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
    27. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
    28. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
    29. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
    30. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
    31. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
    32. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
    33. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
    34. Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
    35. That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
    36. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
    37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
    38. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
    39. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

If you SNIP this scripture AGAIN, and YOU WILL BE showing your true colors. And I will also tell everyone that SCRIPTURES are NOT ALLOWED ON THESE THREADS, unless of course the moderators DECIDE what IS or IS NOT RELEVANT to an ISSUE.

So are you saying you have NO FINAL AUTHORITY in your OWN LANGUAGE?

Where does God say that a translation is not, nor can be His word of truth? Where does God say, that ONLY HEBREW and GREEK are his pure words? If we do not have, nor think that we have God's pure word of truth, then we are believing lies and errors of men as our FINAL AUTHORITY. Are you telling me, that I must now either learn Greek and Hebrew, or rely upon someone else today who does? I THINK NOT! God PROVIDED us his word of TRUTH to which you deny because the ONLY WAY you can condone and justify your use of modern versions, IS TO BELIEVE THIS LIE! Shame on you. You outright DENY AND REJECT what God has PLAINLY given to you, so that you may condone the errors in the favorite flavors of the month versions/counterfits.

I don't believe for a moment that God chose Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek, but rather chose the language of the day to convey His message to humankind. Perhaps all copies, down through the ages, contain errors to prevent man from worshipping the book, rather than worshipping the God of the book.

Translations came about to make God's word understandable in the language of the people. I use the KJV because it is what I grew up with , but I read any and all translations, commentaries and other books that will make God's word clearer to me. Isn't that the reason for the Book?

I think the whole translation debate is a waste of time and energy.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Amen!! to that SisterGranny!

I NEVER thought I would see the day, where someone here would SNIP the scriptures, with the EXCUSE that it is OFF TOPIC. Since when are the scriptures EVER OFF TOPIC for a christian? Boy, we sure are living in perilous times:

    2 Timothy 3

    1. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
    2. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
    3. Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
    4. Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
    5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
    6. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
    7. Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Boy, we are seeing this right before our very eyes, even among those who are christian. This is very sad indeed. Here is another:

    2 Thessalonians 2

    1. Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
    2. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
    3. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
    4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
    5. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
    6. And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
    7. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
    8. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
    9. Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
    10. And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
    11. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
    12. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
    13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
    14. Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    15. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
    16. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
    17. Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Seems as though the Holy Spirit of God is already taking off his restrainment of evil, more and more each day. I pray and hope we all be kept from deception.

It is good to see you today SisterGranny!

love in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,

    The answer lies here:
    (2Ti 3:16 KJV)
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

What part of ALL, don't you understand?

NIV, NASB, KJV, NKJV, HCSB, ESV, and many others are all profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

Henry Higgins: "By jove, I think she's got it!" You have selected a "final authority" that is different than mine. Your option to do that.

We have God's pure WORDS (words actually chosen by God and His inspired writers gave these WORDS). Just as Paul and Chrysostom and Augustine and Erasmus and Wesley and Spurgeon had them before us. In the WORDS God gave. That is our final authority.

BTW, not ONE of the WORDS God gave is in English. English did not even exist. He breathed out specific meaningful WORDS.

    Serious questions ensue, Michelle -

Are you saying that the man-made AV (it no where claims to be more than man-made - read the translators own words) is YOUR "final authority"?

If so, on what basis did you select it as YOUR "final authority"?

If so, would anyone else have the right to select another English translation as THEIR "final authority"?

    Thanks.

    Michelle,
I have read many of your comments on the board and am somewhat dismayed. Here is the picture I get from you:
    1. all education is a waste of time.
2.any understanding of how to interpet what the bible says is a waste if time.
    3. any understanding of greek, hebrew,or aramaic is a waste of time.
4.any Bible college or seminary training is a waste of time.

    1.Do I read this right?
    2.How old are you?
3.Have you any education beyond the primary level?
    4. Does your pastor agree with you?
5.Will you ever answer a question in a straight line?

Where does God say that 17th century period English are His pure words?

That is correct such as calling God’s Passover after the name of a false goddess ishtar (easter).

You had to learn English, then relearn 17th century English. You weren’t born with these abilities.

My “pure” Masoretic version has perfectly preserved jots and tittles, none of the English Bibles do including the KJV so is the KJV a LIE?

    One more time.

All translations are flawed because inspiration does not extend to them.
Translators are neither prophets or apostles, holy men of God moved by the Holy Spirit.

Proof: There are differences in existing King James Bibles today.

Quantity/quality of differences does not matter, God is incapable of even the smallest mistake.

“things which are different are not the same”.

Which KJV on the market today contains the “pure” words of God, the Oxford edition, the Cambridge or the Nelson and how do you know which it is?

    --------------------------------------------------

First of all, I don't look at the translators opinions as the authority of Almight God. Many sadly here on these threads do, although prove themselves hypocrates when they verbally attack them. The translators of the KJB were not, nor are they God. Only God is, and ONLY HIS WORD is authoritative.

That is if you believe it was only man made, and NOT PROVIDED by God. The church for generations not only thought so, but believed so. I also believe it, as it is not only evidenced in Church History, but in my heart also. God speaks to me through HIS word of truth, and I know it is HIM and His WORDS speaking to me. I do not question, nor doubt it. I do not believe it has errors, because there are no errors. For if there were errors, then it would not be GOD'S WORD OF TRUTH, and then not authoritative. God does not, nor cannot lie. I do not DENY the POWER and PROVIDENCE of God concerning his word in a translation of HIS WILL. How do we know it is the will of God? By the testimony of the Holy Spirit upon your heart of the truth revealed within. By this same manner, we also CAN and DO KNOW what are the counterfits, for the Lord has said:

    John 10

    1. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
    2. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
    3. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
    4. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
    5. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

The truth is, the modern versions, and those christians who support and condone them, are strangers to me.

    --------------------------------------------------
If so, on what basis did you select it as YOUR "final authority"?
    --------------------------------------------------

By the scriptures themselves that God has PLAINLY MADE EVIDENT IN MY LANGUAGE from Genesis 1 - Rev. 22:21. Every single word of it. How do I know they are the Lord's words? John 10, 16, 17. Every single one of them! Just as God used the prophets of the Old testament, and the Apostles of the New for the giving of the scriptures, he has also used men in TRANSLATION to TRANSLATE the SCRIPTURES ACCURATELY into the prospective language, under HIS WILL, and PROVIDENCE and TIMING. I do not, nor will I EVER QUESTION it, nor do I NEED TO, as the Lord has revealed HIMSELF to me through them.

If so, would anyone else have the right to select another English translation as THEIR "final authority"?

It is not a RIGHT Dr. Bob, nor is it a CHOICE that we have. God provides, and we THANKFULLY ACCEPT. God REVEALS THIS to the believer. It is not something that one can choose of their own mind. You either have his authority, or you don't. There is no middle ground of compromise on this. You either believe it, live it, and share it or you deny it, reject it, and suffer the consequence of unbelief and doubt.

    Thanks.

    Your welcome.

That's odd, I can't seem to find the verse that says the KJV is the only valid English translation. Can you please refer me to that verse.
