The Bible teaches that those in authority there because God put them there, and that he is in control of everything they do.

Daniel 2:20-21 20 Daniel said, "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him. 21 "It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.

While some may find that distasteful, to believe less is to demean the person of God who has frequently in human history appointed wicked men to positions of authority to serve his own purposes of glorifying his name (e.g., Pharoah, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, Herod, etc). God is not nearly so interested in America as he is in himself. And we should not be either.

Sorry Larry. We have no king but God. And God tells us to obey the just orders of our rulers. In America, that's the Constitution. And under the Constitution, we have the right and the duty as Americans to criticise and even remove public servants who err.

[quiote]While some may find that distasteful,[/quote]

Real Americans find your attempt to equate Bush to a king to be distasteful. If you want a monarch, there are still seats on airlines heading elsewhere.

So if God fixed the last election to put Bush in, what makes yoiu think He isn't fixing public opinion to bring Bush down? Sounds a little... well, you know.

You should be, based on your inexplicable reading of my post. How in the world did you manage to think that I equated Bush with a king? That is absolutely inconceivable. And on top of that you managed to insinuate that I am not a “real American,” based on your poor reading of my post.

Actually he tells us to obey them all, except when they demand disobedience to God.

I completely agree. And we should exercise it as we have opportunity, within the bounds of law.

How in the world did you manage to think that I equated Bush with a king? This is part of your overall problem. You don’t read closely and you don’t think critically.

The verse I cited shows that God ordains rulers. And remember the original question was about God being sovereign in our government. The verse cited shows that God indeed does ordain the rulers that are. In the context of Daniel in the ANE, it was kings in particular in view. But the principle is true of all rulers. It would be most unreasonable to think the verse teaches that God establishes only kings, but not other levels of government.

More to the point, as you can tell by reading my post, I never called Bush a king, or equated him with a king. Your attack on my patriotism is unconscionable, as is your twisting of my post. Aren't you one who decries it when someone on the right "attacks the patriotism" of someone on the left for questioning the government? How can you be so inconsistent?

“Correct” was the word that came to my mind, though I think “fixed” is probably too prejudicial a word.

The truth is that God is in control of all things, or to put it the way God did, He is in the heavens doing whatever he pleases (Ps 115:3). He “works all things after the counsel of his own will” (Eph 1:11). As Nebuchadnezzar recognized, “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, 'What have You done?’” (Dan 4:35).

So yes, God intended for Bush to be president, and intended everything that has happened. He also intended for Clinton, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, etc to be president. That does not in any way make God the author of their evil doing. They are responsible for their own wickedness, just as we all are.

So please stop making stuff up. Do not accuse me of stuff I did not say and do not mean. If you are confused, just ask. I will be glad to explain it, even if we disagree on it. I have asked you to do this before, but as with so many things, it seems you would rather pop off with some smart aleck attack then try to understand the point being made. Please do us all a favor and stop.

The Mark Foley scandal will not "bring down" the Republican party.

If the party is in trouble, it is because they have, fiscally, begun to act like democrats instead of Republicans.

That would be a great idea, but it would require a nation ready to step up to the responsibilities of having less government.

The people have been weaned to dependance on government to basically control every aspect of everything.

I don't think there's a way to go back on that. We'd self-destruct, at least if it happened all at once.

I think a more sensible thing at this point in time would be to work on getting more good people into office. This involves faith, patience, and time.

    1. Quit voting based on party affiliation. Start voting based on Godly principles.

    2. Quit being so judgmental of decent people already in office. Power is limited, even when it comes to the President. Nobody is acting single-handedly, nobody can force their will alone to be done. Support them in what they do accomplish so they can stay encouraged. How awful would it be to be a Christian trying to change the world, only to have your own turn their backs on you because you can't do it all?

    3. Raise up children to care about the government. Peak their interest in their country and how it is run. Maybe in time we'll actually have really decent candidates to choose from!

It is the same ole story: Vote for the lesser of evils and at this time I still think that is Perry. However, Kinky may be gaining some ground.

That is the mind set that keeps the two parties in power.

A good idea except that power corrupts. The U.S. constitution was meant to limit the reach and influence of the government. Even good people in office can't stop an overreaching government that doesn't follow its own rules.

Government power doesn't have to be rolled back in one fell swoop. We have taken four decades to get into this mess; it will take at least that long to get out of it.

    Hey Bitsy,

First of all, I trust that all is well with you and your family.

I don't think it will bring down the GOP. I have seen surveys done where this doesn't really change voter opinions about their own candidates.

Would the Democrats handle it differently? Yes - they did... back in the eighties.
Did they do a better job of handling it? It is way too soon to draw any conclusions. The scandal is not even a week old.

I have already gone on record as saying that I don't think the Democrats will take over either the House or the Senate. I would really be astonished if any real change takes place (aside from a few victories on either side). As much as I would like to see George Allen be put out of a job, I really don't think that's going to happen.

As always, I very much enjoy your posts, and look forward to reading what you think.

God Blessings to you and yours,
    BiR (your LIBERAL brother-in-Christ)

Ok, I agree with that, for the most part. The exception is that I do believe that good people in office can start to make a difference. But if you don't believe that to be the case, what would be your idea of a good start towards positive change?

Unfortunately, Gina, it is the nature of a government to expand. The only way to go back to smaller government is to start over and I don't see how we do that unless the government collapses of its own weight.

They sure did. Studds was allowed to retire, after he told America to mind their own business. Unless you have a different story.

Well, that is part of the story, Bro. Curtis.....

BTW, have you been doing any biking lately? Any cool stories worth sending to me? I am hoping to get up to our tiny mountains this weekend, specifically over by Harrisonburg, VA.

Haven't heard from you in a while, hope all is well with you and yours,

I was in quite a wreck, late this summer, ruined a front rim, and scraped myself up really good, I haven't done any real hard riding since. I still ride the five miles back & forth to work everyday, I have a great view of Lolo Peak on the way there, & Snowbowl & Squaw Peaks on the way home. And ski season fast approaches......

I would be interested to read another take of the Studds incident. I think the GOP supporters acted with shame & disgust when Foley was discovered, yet I don't remember an ounce of remorse from democrats in the eighties. I remember Studds telling people to back off, and I remember them backing off. He still collects a salary, as far as I know. Something Foley won't be able to do.

The republican party of the last two administrations has had to deal with a lot of nastiness. I feel sorry for the next one. Because I doubt the democrats will win an important election for a while.

One difference is that Studds affair with the page took place a decade before the scandal broke and the former page stood by his side. Ten years would be time enough for the former page to have turned against him, but they remained friends. So, you're talking about a 10 year old affair where the victim does not acknowledge having been a victim.

And the 1980s were a different time, politically and socially.

Mandatory disclaimer: I suppose it is necessary to state here and now that I do not approve of adults hitting on teenagers or of employers hitting on employees.
