    Hi
Has anyone had problems installing Windows XP service pack 2? My brother-in-law installed it, and then his computer wouldn't boot up normally anymore. He had to go to system restore to get his computer working normally again. So now I'm scared to install mine because I'm computer challenged as it is.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks

I installed it on my laptop without any problems, but I had just formatted the laptop and reinstalled.

I've heard of lots of problems. I have no intention of putting it on my desktop until I get a new HDD and format it from scratch.

Yes, many people had problems with it, microsoft has downplayed it but have a fix on their site. If you can't find it let me know and I will see if I can find the instructions etc.

Lucky you could get to system restore. I couldn't boot in any way and had to reformat and restore from scratch.

Both my wife and I are running with SP2 and have had no problems. I had ordered the CD from Microsoft rather than download on line, but before it came, SP2 began to automatically install. I forgot that I had left my computer on auto-update. I let it go and it did its work with no hitches. There are a few situations that are somewhat different, but very intuitive when you come to them. The pop-up blocker can be an annoyance now and then, so I just turned it off. I realize some have had real problems, but we are running smoothly to this date. ( I always say that, because tomorrow is another day!)

I installed SP2 right after it came out without any problems. I made sure everything was up to date beforehand.

I've installed it on my laptop as well as my wife's desktop without any difficulties. Both machines work like a charm!

Thanks for your input, now what will happen if I never install SP2?

Had no problems with it, but I also didn't install it immediately. I had waited a few months. It was less about identifying potential problems and more about not getting around to it [IMG] .

    Hi,

Yeh I have had problems, my computer appears to have downloaded it via Windows Update but it fails to install every time.

The main thing with SP2 is that is patches and plugs holes and problems in WinXP. Without it, those known holes and weak spots are still there, waiting to be exploited.

The biggest problem with SP2 was with hardware. Some peripherals just quit working after SP2 was installed ( not with my comp, but with others). Microsoft has a list posted somewhere on that expanse they call a site, but I can't stand to wade into that quagmire search that they have.

    In Christ,
