Please pray for a young Mormon Missionary. “Elder” Schull, from the U.S., who was proselytizing in our town centre today. He suggested that I read the Book of Mormon and pray and ask the Father to witness to it as God’s Word. I asked him why I would do that. He said so that the Spirit would tell me the Book of Mormon was God’s Word. I asked him how I would know it was true spirit? He said that I would now because my experience would be borne out by the experience of many others. I asked how do I know their experience is true? He asked me, “Can 2 million people be wrong?” “Yes,” I replied. He conceded they could be. I quoted Isaiah 8:20, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” I pointed out that unless what he believed harmonised with Bible it could not be true.

I told him I saw no difference between his religion and many others. He asked me what I meant. I said, “Well, you believe that I please God by repenting, being baptised, keeping the commandments and doing good.” He agreed. I pointed out that this was no different from Catholicism, Anglicanism and others. He agreed. I told him “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” He said Mormonism was different in that it had revelation given by apostles. I asked him how he knew that to be true, we went back to his prayer and experience. I told him that thousands of people would tell me their experience is true, why should I believe his over theirs? He said he prayed and had a feeling confirming the truth of the Book of Mormon in his heart. I told him “the heart was deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?”

He said, “What have you got to lose by having the missionaries come to your home and show how the Book of Mormon is true?” I asked, “What have got to gain?” He said, “You have a strong faith, but just because you have a Mac, doesn’t mean you should not consider a Sony?” I replied if I have Jesus Christ why would I consider Joseph Smith?” He concluded our conversation at that point, on the basis I was unwilling to pray over the Book of Mormon. I told him to look up Isaiah 8:20. The conversation was polite and cordial, but pray the Spirit of God will convict this well-meaning young man about the need to confirm his experience with Scripture

The sad thing is that many professing Christians have been deceived by them. In our little town in the Bible Belt, the Mormons have recently built a new church, populated mainly by former Baptists. Walter Martin once referred to the cults as "The unpaid bills of the church."
