    1 Timothy 2:11 (KJV)
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence
    .

    1 Corinthians 14:34 (KJV)
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

    1 Corinthians 11:5 (KJV)
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

Why is Paul against, at least to one, woman teaching man but not prophesying?

It seems to me prophecy and teaching are all the same; communicating God's word to men. Why place injunctions on one and not the other? Or rather, why would a woman be disqualified from one on account of her gender and not the other?

Well, he never prohibits them to teach in all circumstances.

He was speaking to women having the spiritual gift to prophesy by the Holy Spirit in the Church at that time, as they were women gifted to do that, but the axctual preaching and teachings of the scriptures was assigned to the men.

I understand that. I'm asking why teaching and not prophecy? What is the difference between these two?

I know it, and I don't wish to assume your understanding of the same. What's your reading?

Basically, the Greek word that is translated to woman in the verse has an extra meaning to it that means a disruptive woman. The word does not have a /good/ context to it, and suggests more than the quality of simply being a woman.
Here's a page that goes until more detail about it, and other passages:

I’m alive to this school of thought. Some even suggest it was a couple addressed hence the singular. What about the other verse, 1 Cor 14:34?

teaching would be expounding on the meaning of the scriptures, while prophecy of that time was the Holy Spirit giving forth utterances thru someone for the local church or to individuals, like when person stated that paul would be bound and death awaited him in rome.

What is interesting to me is that women missionaries seem to be given some latitude to teach and led in foreign lands just getting now the gospel.

Both are communicating the Word of God. Why are they banned from one and not the other?

Teaching was quoting and commenting on the OT, while the other was direct utterance form the Holy Spirit thru someone.
